Did you guy`s check out the new GF 5 Valvoline spec sheet yet? I noticed the 5W30 Conventional cold pour point is the same as the Synpower 5W30. Thought that was interesting. -42

That's really neato!!! but what about all the invisible additives that people don't like. Everyone considers this to be a weak oil.

Any oil that meets GF5 and SN is NOT a weak oil IMO. The base oils used to meet these specs far exceed the oils used only a few years ago. That is why some of the base oil refiners are getting out of the Grp. 1 business and closing Grp. 1 refineries. Any oil today that has a API and ILSAC seal will work just fine and provide protection for the OCI that is speced by the maker. Just take a look at the extended intervals that OLM system are providing. The one major change I have made since becoming a BITOG member is the doubling of my OCI to 9-10k miles in all instances. Good point.

Not always as there are a few uoa in the uoa section now that show some serious wear and low tbn. But sure for the most part that is true. I just hate being the one that made a mistake because of something I saw on the internet IMHO.

Look at CCS and MRV #s not pour point, but Yes GF5 is pretty much the equal of the fake syn you've been buying the past few years afa base stock and cleanliness for normal OCI. Only those doing unaided starts regularly below -20C need a "special" oil and of course the hard charging TC guys. Race and raced cars need race oil not ILSAC RATED OILS.

I wish we could get some real information regarding statements like these instead of just opinions.

Its called the API and ILSAC GF5 performance target radar chart. It evidences improvemsnt in most categories year revision over spec revision. Read anything lately? Go to Lubrizol sponser website.
Why ask technical questions or expect anything other than shade tree opinion on a layperson forum where possibly <1% professional chemists and tribologiost reside and contribute? Go To Noria.

ARCO-
1) I was not trying to make some kind of snarly remark towards you.

2) I actually just spent about an hour on the GF-5 website last night getting a refresher course. The target radar chart that you are referring to does not show a comparison between GF-5 conventional and GF-5 synthetic. It only shows the improvements between GF-4 and GF-5 overall. There is no differentiation on the website between conventional and synthetic.

If you can find where it does, please let me know I would be glad to read it.

Sadly, "Synthetic" is not a spec but a marketing term, and guarantees no performance enhancement over "conventional oil" especially given that most No.Am. "full synthetic" oils are "conventional" with 20-30 percent more detergency and (possibly) a touch more % high VI base stock. It's best to buy a synthetic oil or any oil by is approval list, such as: BMW LL 01-FE or the needed mercedes or VW spec. Here we see Gm Dexos I and Honda HT06 as high spec oils to meet certain manufacturers needs. That said EXxon marketing will gladly show you a couple photos of test sequence pistons taken with a brighter flash bulb showing less deposits than their conventional oil.
