Is Dexron VI backwards compatible with Dexron III?

For GM vehicles, yes.

Can anyone tell me the difference between the new blue bottle Dex/Merc ATF and the old Red bottle Maxlife Dex/Merc ATF? I don't see Dex/Merc on the new red bottle ATF. My honda needs the Dex/Merc.

You probably already found out by now, but GM doesn't license Dexron lll anymore. Ford doesn't license the original Mercon spec, either. So, containers just say ATF, but are old Dex/Merc compatible formulas. Stick with a name brand and you'll be fine.
The new Dexron and Mercon formulas are advanced fluids, and some are backwards compatible. If you're interested in them, be sure to do your research.
