With my Costco coupon I can buy conventional 5W30 Formula Shell SN for $2.00 per qrt. While I can run 5W30 in my newer cars - they are spec'd for 5W20 on the oil fill cap. Therefore I tend to run synthetic 5W20 QSUD , PP or M1 for my applications . * If I were to run a shorter 3K OCI once a year with the 5W30 Formula Shell + up to 25% of MMO (for cleaning cycle) perhaps that would be beneficial and justify the purchase of the Formula Shell ?

Why the MMO? IMHO I'd skip it and just run the Shell.
You don't necessarily need to add the mmo... I am running 5w30 in the Focus that spec's 5w20.. because I had the 5w30.. no other reason. It should be just fine to run a tad higher grade. I will probably go back to buying 5qt jugs, but I bought this case at Costco the last time they had the coupon.

If you normally run those 3 oils, why do you think you would need to clean up anything in your engines?
No MMO needed, because there's nothing to clean up.
Just run the Shell straight up, and you can run it the normal 5k miles if you so wanted to do so.

I don't know what the original poster's application is, but here's my take. I don't know what vehicles he has or whether their under warranty.
If the concern is that 5w-30 is too thick and not an ideal choice for the engines, how is adulterating it with MMO going to improve things? Either run the speced oil or run the 5w-30. MMO has no place in this decision.

Thanks for the replies - in hindsight if using the synthetic oils there would be no need for the occasional MMO clean up . No Formula Shell was available in 5W20 at Costco... So with 5W30 Formula Shell I believe safe to say I could use it for my summer fill and return to synthetic 5W20 for the winter fill (i.e. in vehicles spec'd for 5W20 still under warranty) .
