New tool thread

I go shopping for pint sized containers all the time. Preferably filled!

I am in the market for a cordless edger. I have all Makita 18V tools but don't see an affordable option with them. I would prefer not to get another tool brand and deal with chargers and batteries but for a one off tool, Ryobi is very affordable. I have not ruled out gas though. I am still using a gas trimmer and blower.
The choice of edger depends on how much you need to edge and how often. I have the Ryobi 18V stick edger and it works fine; it would be a little too weak for big jobs but I currently have a single lot in a cul de sac (driveway, short walkway, and curb) so it is sufficient. My last house would have prompted a better unit (double corner lot with sidewalks and curbs all around, walkway to the house, driveway, etc.

I have a Stihl and run it maybe twice a year. I use the Stihl mix has as a results and it starts first pull every time.

With roots and whatnot even it can be a bit weak. I can’t imagine an electric one will be better.

For as seldom as it is used, could you swap heads on your trimmer?
I had a Troy Bilt 4 cycle power head with trimmer and edger attachments but it never really ran well. The current trimmer is an Echo but not a power head type unit. Makita has a power head for 18V batteries but I already have their electric trimmer. I may wait and see if another one of those Ryobi deals pops up with free tools or extra batteries.

I wish I knew what a power trimmer actually did before buying the attachment for my Milwaukee 18v power head. For me, it merely flings stones. No other residual value. Back to edging the garden beds manually.

Is that the edger with the blade or the line trimmer type? I am definitely looking for the blade version I just am hesitant to purchase yet another battery and charger brand.

Its the blade version and looks like this. I already had a few ryobi tools so this was not a separate battery platform. Else I would have chose one that fits my batteries.

Got a couple odds and ins today. Duralast 10mm deep 1/4 drive socket. My Craftsman Taiwan one is under the hood of some RAV4 out there lol. I had a Snap-on one but I don’t like to use it because the chrome started peeling off a lot more so I’m going to get it warrantied but I forgot today. A 22mm wrench to have so I don’t have to unroll my set of Snap-on that goes from 20-24 I can just grab this one and go. I actually will say I liked the fit of this one it seems a bit tighter than Snap-on to be honest. Power Torque short ball allen sockets. I have a long set of Carlyle at work already but I know a place where the 10mm one will be very useful on some Toyota stuff. Also got a Power Torque 10mm deep 1/4 drive socket too which I put in the car tool bag. I also picked up three Snap-on chrome 6 point 1/2 drive sockets a 17mm deep, 21mm deep and 30mm shallow. The guy at O’Reilly was like if any of these break just bring it back and we will replace it no questions asked. Glad to see they acknowledge the tool has a warranty. It was the O’Reilly in my work town and AutoZone I work less than a mile from both and Advance Auto is right next door so I love going to these places on my lunch break. Napa is about a 5 minute drive but they don’t have any tools hardly at all. This O’Reilly still had some of the old brand GM Performance tools there I was so tempted to get them but I sure don’t need them lol. The Snap-on are all for the house. Didn’t need the 30 it just looked cool and mine are all 12 point so had to get the 6 point lol.

Copy. That was one of the basic ones I was looking at. I wish Makita made a simple and affordable one as I have plenty of batteries and chargers.
That is one reason i adopted Ryobi...lots of tool options from inflators to impacts to lawn equipmemt, etc. And it's more than enough power/durability for DIY use.

If you end up opting for the Ryobi edger and depending on how often you plan to use it, it may be worth considering a battery adapter for Makita/Ryobi (about $12-15 at ebay/amazon/walmart). OTOH a 4Ah battery still has 4/4 bars after I finish using the edger, so a single battery/charger should suffice.

Warranty replacement Craftsman tools. The 90 tooth ratchet is a huge upgrade from the old raised panel. The raised panel ones are good for collecting but terrible to use in my opinion. This one locked up on me so I emailed and got a replacement took a full two weeks to arrive. 8 days for the ratcheting wrench to arrive because I warrantied it out two days after the ratchet.

I’ve had some Milwaukee M18 and M12 tools for a while now, with mostly 20v DeWalt. With a lot of my DeWalt batteries aging out and getting weak, I wanted to switch.

Sold my existing DeWalt fleet to my brother and picked up a bunch of M12 and M18 stuff today on buy one, get one, and free tool with battery promotions.

Added 4x 4.0 XC M12 batteries, 4x 6.0 M18 batteries. A 3/8 M12 Fuel stubby impact wrench with 5.0 XC. M12 inflator, M12 grease gun, M12 multi tool, M18 Fuel grinder and a M18 Sawzall. I already had the M12 Fuel 1/4 and 3/8 ratchets, M18 1/4 impact driver, M18 hammer drill, M18 compact router, M18 fuel jigsaw and M18 hand held vacuum. In batteries I already had a M18 2.0, 4.0 XC, 5.0 XC, 8.0 Forge and 2x M12 5.0 XC. Mounted all of my chargers and cable managed the cords to keep them tidy.

Milwaukee is also sending me a courtesy replacement M18 1/2 impact gun for one I had bought Dad in 2021 that died after 3 uses (I bought him another new one this last Christmas.)

I should be set for a while. I think the 3/8 stubby will be my new favorite.
