Scored a Bison 8" 3 jaw chuck extremely cheap, NOS from 1997 & was locked up. Took the risk & bought it.
The grease they used to manufacture it had dried out, And I mean DRIED out sticking everything together like glue. Spent 10 hours disassembling, cleaning, & assembly.
Spent another 3 hours machining the register as the chuck register is 2.250" & the register on my lathe spindle is 2.280". I mounted the chuck adapter plate backwards directly to the spindle & let it bottom ledge of the register.....Using some shim stock to get it indicated in.......Using 3/4" Boring Bar to cut out the .030", Actual .0297 oversize to fit the register tighter.
I didn't have high expectations as I have no way to true this chuck after install like the old one, Well it ended up surpassing those expectations by A LOT!!!
Best I can tell it's under .001" runout, The machine runs 1000 times smoother. I'm almost scared to remove this chuck because what if this is a lightning strike scenario?
Bet you guys are tired of my lathe posts?
