New to welding, feedback please...

1/4" plate, Try grinding the edges 45 degs down through half the thickness, you should then get full penetration.

Can you get a Gas kit for that welder?

No gas option on the little welder, flux core only. I'll try the v-groove today and see what happens. Thanks

Thanks a bunch everyone. I'm gathering all this feedback to apply to some more practice welds today.

Thanks for the kind words people. I have so much to learn but I really enjoy welding. I was pretty happy with it also. Perhaps it's in my head but the Lincoln brand wire made a big difference on this machine.

A couple more today, not as nice thats for sure. I was trying a few different techniques. Sure hate the slag on the flux core ones...

Have you tried a straight push or zig zag push technique instead of circles? Circular patterns are used with stck welding but not really needed with wire feed. Welding is all about controlling heat and moving it where you want. Watching the puddle and moving it where it needs to go is far more important than practicing a particular pattern over and over. That circular pattern is spreading the heat out and you are not penetrating. You should practice trying to burn through and going slow and straight then modify your technique until you are managing the penetration and getting the fill you need.

Right now you are only going through the motions and hoping if you move just right it will get better. You need to actively adjust according to what the puddle is telling you. I'd rather see a lumpy weld with good penetration than a perfectly symmetric weld that is only on the surface.

Never knew that thanks! I will give that some time on the machine. Here I thought it was all row of dimes...

I might point out that that HF 90 amp welder is AC output as well. I think that's why it makes so much spatter. If you use flux core wire with a mig welder, you use DC electrode negative, and you get less spatter.

I haven't been a professional welder since 1979, but I can tell you either need to tack those a little farther apart or bevel the edges. A quick lick with a grinder and you'll be GTG.

I hate flux core. Get a gas kit if at all possible. I procrastinated forever not getting mine. Come to find out I had all teh stuff in a box in the back in a corner for years. Sheesh. Gas is the quickest way to make your welds better.

Keep it up and someday you'll look like you know what you're doing...

I am really leaning towards the Hobart 210 MVP. Quick change 115/230 plugs for versatility and gas ready.
