I'm new to the site, and would like to do a UOA on my Jeep XJ with 4.0. I've been running Quaker State 4x4 SUV oil for the last 3 years. 10-30 in the winter, and 10-40 in the summer.

From the searching I've done so far, it looks like:

10-30 Mobil-1 is bad (high numbers on Iron with UOA)

Quaker State 4X4 has good numbers. (I don't know the first thing when it comes to looking at the numbers, got this from searching)

The 4.0 loves high viscosity oil.

I need to get a UOA done.

How do I go about getting a UOA? Do I have to send it somewhere to get it analyzed, or can I take it to a local shop?

fellow jeep owner!

It appears that our 4.0 tractor engines like heavier oil ..it's not always the case. Some here have done real well with 10w-30 oils. So, the Fe is a condition that looks like viscosity takes care of it ..but it might be some additive component of newer oils that might do the job just as well

Thanks man! So what's the consensus say about which oil is best for the 4.0? I've been running the Quaker State 4x4 blend, and change it between 3-5k. I also use the Napa Gold filter aka WIX.

BTW, here's a quick pic.

XJ99,

Add the Dyson Analysis to your UOA. The extra bucks are worth every penny.

Thanks, I ordered my test kit today.

I use Rotella T synthetic 5w-40 (RTS) usually. Excellent oil that can endure a very long OCI without breaking a sweat.

There's no consensus, per se~. It would probably depend on your driving habits and annual mileage on what would make the most sense.

I'm into extended drains ..so a synth is pretty much a mandate given our natural "exceed the need" paranoia. For me it's 6month+/- or 10k which ever comes first. I've done over a year/9k on my SE Wrangler.

I think the higher iron in mobil 1 is just cleaning going on. You need to contact Blackstone for a UOA. Here is the link.http://www.blackstone-labs.com/. Good luck.

I see. The more I read the more it seems synthetic is used more for longer OCIs, than anything else. I've probably got about 3k on the oil right now, so when I get the UOA kit I'll go ahead and send it in.

I'm curious to see how the QS 4x4 oil is holding up since I do go off-road. (low speeds, high revs)
It's probably all a bunch of marketing hype geared towards people like me. LOL

I want to use an oil I can pick up easily at a local auto parts store. Some of these oils seem harder to come by. Also, at Napa they sell a synthetic for under $3 a quart. He says it's made by Havoline. That's about the same price as I'm paying now for the QS oil. At that price I wouldn't mind changing it every 3-5k!

If you're wheeling a bunch ..slinging mud in low range and whatnot, you're not going to be happy leaving oil in there too long. If you can get synth cheap enough.. it may make sense. Your UOA will tell you how you're doing with the QS under your current OCI.

Napa oil is made by ashland AKA valvoline. Stay with the QS if you like. It's the only semi-syn that I know of that passes GM's 4718 cert. That is the corvette high temp certification that is one of the most demanding cerfifications in the industory.
