New to me 2014 Tiguan R line; questions about lube, internals, etc

I just got off the phone with VW because they were having a $79 oil change special, and they told me they won’t put anything in it besides 502 00.

Currently my living situation has changed and I can work on my on vehicles at the moment. Perhaps, the best thing would be to buy the oil a filter myself and have an independent shop do it.

Why you didn’t go with Mobil1 ESP 5W30?
It’s what the shop has. At my 6 month mark I’ll be at like 3800 miles and it will get changed again. It will be ok, but next time, I will go with Castrol 5w30 LL or 5w30 ESP.

They said I can bring my own parts next time. I don’t have time to source anything local.

I driving more than I thought I would be. I am 4,000 miles already on my Tiguan. I’m tracking to do 5k in 5 months. I was looking for VW 504 00 oils, but what happened? Prices have shot up. I’ve tried eBay, Amazon and Walmart, but I’m seeing prices like $50 for a 5 quart jug. Is this just where the market is for 504?

I would go Mobil1 ESP 5W30 as it is more shear stable.
$37 with filter in local Auto Zone or AAP.
Advanced auto doesn’t carry it in my area. Autozone has the oil for $37, but this oil doesn’t work with the deal, which is ok with me since the deal is for STP filters.

The oil at that price is much lower than anywhere else, so thank you for that.

With the kind of miles you seem to be running, I would find an online deal for a filter multipack and get 6 or 10 or whatever at a time, once and be done with it. (For example, Walmart has a 6-pack of Purolator filters for $72)

You can get oil the same way, or when a place runs a special, or just when you need it. I would advise having at least one OCI already in the stash so you're not panicking if you happen to forget ordering stuff.

I haven’t been able to find VW 504 00 5w30 yet at Walmart for a good price. When I had my Mk5 Rabbit vw 502 00 was easy to find and really cheap. I’ll stock up when it’s convenient.

Not really sure what's considered good price these days, but there's also Valvoline Euro 5w30 for $37 on 5L jugs at Autozone.

I would run the M1 ESP 5w30 and not look back. You can also use the 0w30 flavor of ESP, it carries the 504 spec and is also $27ish at Walmart.

I found Mobil 1 5w30 ESP for $37 at autozone. Which what in bought. I saw that Walmart had 0w30, but I wanted something a little more shear stable for my direct injection motor with not the greatest timing chain reputation.

Thanks for the suggestion.

Mobil 1 0W-30 ESP is shear stable. It meets the same approval requirements as the 5W for stay-in-grade.

It’s a common Internet “rule” that less of a grade spread is always better but that’s actually not true. First off it wholly depends on the engine design as to whether mechanical shear of the VM is even an issue (and it rarely is), and the quality of the VII and base stock composition are critical factors. EM does not use inferior VII. There is no reason to avoid the Walmart product especially in light of being $10 less expensive.

I see, so you disagree with the statement that ESP 5w30 is more shear stable than 0w30, a statement that was said in this thread.

Well, I have already purchased my oil, but I will take that into consideration.

Both oils are 229.51/229.52 and 504/507 approved, so they have to meet the same standards at minimum. I usually use the 5w30 but switch to 0w30 for the cold season ahead.

If you can find one or the other at a steep discount, you'd be silly for not using probably among the best commercially-available lubes.

I do live in Arizona, so a 0w isn’t too critical for me. ESP is highly praised in this forum. Many like you regard it highly.

It's probably the best bang for the buck you can buy now that WM stocks it for under $30 for 5 quarts. I run it in both of my vehicles, it's so good I even replaced my morning coffee with ESP and no regrets so far.
