New to me 2014 Sonata 2.4 (again)

Well, Mom and Dad's old Camry finally gave up the ghost at over several hundred thousand miles (dad says he's keeping it). They were looking for a nice used vehicle and not trusting a dealership, they took over mine. So I now went and purchased another 2.4 Sonata with just 12000 miles on the odo but no oil change history except for one receipt showing a change using Valvoline Synpower last April. I changed the oil today and no fuel smell nor strange color. The filter was a factory one. I replaced with the same oil and a NapaSilver 31334. I also changed the air filter with the extra NapaGold I bought for my old 2.4.

My in tensions are to go 5K to 7500k miles on this oil change. Should this be OK or would you use this oil change as a flush and employ a shorter oci?

You should be fine. The first oil change in a used vehicle can be served as a flush and can have a shorter interval. Seeing that your new car has only 12k on it with at least one oil change in its history, I doubt it has any accumulation from lack of oil changes. However. with so very little miles a shorter oil change will probably help flush out any debris from that engine still breaking in. Congrats on your purchase.

I'm always surprised at posters who answer a question with a question while providing 0 useful insight on the topic. I remember in school, teachers always said that a stupid question is one that is not asked. This forum serves the same purpose.

I would suspect that it has had only 1 oil change up until now. I would just leave the new oil in for 7500.

Funny, because when we bought my wife's Santa Fe it had 12,000 miles on it. Also, no oil change history. The dealer had done one as soon as they got it (QSGB and OEM Filter.) I did two OCI's of 3,750 with Castrol Synthetic blend and then shifted to 5,000 mile intervals using synthetic (usually NAPA.) I use the OEM filters also. I will say that I have 4 Bosch 3312's, 2 PL14459's and a DW4459 in my stash, but I am a tad bit Colonel Sanders to use them......,:)

I think after on short OCI you would be fine at 7500 miles. Oh, my wife is from Ocala, FL.

Great info and thanks for sharing. This is what I was looking for specifically. Having only one documented oci, I wondered if any deposits had taken hold...ocd, I know. But with so little miles, that maybe overthinking the matter. I did the old pen light down the fill whole and the cursory investigation showed a very clean top end.

As for the oil filters, I know that Hyundai makes a well built one but I've never had trouble with well made aftermarket ones either. Your stash consists of one's I would use without hesitation (yes, even the PL14459 [PureOne]). This is our fourth Hyundai.

I'm not really brand loyal anymore (since joining BITOG) but was partial to Valvoline and Castrol before. I may stick with Valvoline since the old loyalty has a way of creeping back into your life, Lol. BUT will definitely stick to 5w20. The Santa fe 2.0T is on a steady diet of Pennzoil Ultra until that small stash expires.

BTW, http://www.valvolineeurope.com/english/lubricant_advisor, recommends 5w20/30 and 40 for this 2.4GDi Sonata/i45. In case anyone was wondering.

The car has 12,000 total miles. It already had one oil change with Valvoline Synpower - one of the premium synthetics on the market. And you're worried about a flush with a short OCI? What the ....?

The oil wasn't really dark? On my Accent with Synpower after 3,750 miles that oil was black.

I have the same observation with 2 vehicles. A 2010 Mazda3 2.0 and an Accent 1.6 (non GDI). The oil goes almost clear. Actually, it's the clearest I've seen so far. Went out super dark after 8000Km.
