Group I oils just don't hold up that well in high heat/stress situations, and the lighter grades didn't hold up as well as the heavier ones in high heat/stress conditions. With the widespread adoption of high performance Group II base oils (at least here in North America since the late 1990's), one can drop a grade (to a 40 weight), and still get much better overall protection than what those old GI based 20W-50 oils afforded back in the 1980's.
I would recommend a CI-4+ or CJ-4 rated 15w40 HDEO (Heavy Duty Engine Oil), like Rotella T or Delo 400 (which are GII based) in place of 20W-50's, these days. These modern high-performance HDEO's offer synthetic like performance.
An alternative, would be the synthetic HDEO's in the 5W-40 variety. The only real advantage of these synthetics is better cold weather performance and they are longer drain capable. But don't let the reasonable price (fleet of 14 vehicles
) of conventional HDEO's deter you, these conventional GII based oils these days offer a very high level of performance. Plus you can readily buy these 15w40's in 5 gallon pails.
Well stated and I recommend the same.
