Hi, I ordered a "new" OEM thermostat for my 98 Toyota Corolla from an Amazon vendor and received what appears to me to be a used one, but I have no experience with these, so wonder if anyone can take a look at the pics and let me know whether I should return it or not.

Is that oily-looking coating supposed to be there on a new thermostat?

Thanks in advance for your help.

That does look rusty and used! Send it back. I have had good luck with Stant Superstat thermostats in my Corollas. Just make sure you get the 180 degree OEM temperature.

Looks like it sat in a humid warehouse for a while but looks like it wasn't used. I would still return it.

+1

Return it and drive over to the dealer and buy one. I got one for my Camry at the dealer last year. Was $38 and worth every penny so that I didn't have to deal with the aftermarket garbage thermostats.

Here is some good advice... Spend the extra cash and buy one from the dealer.. You will feel ripped off a little but you have less chance of having more drama in your life.

I will bet the one on the dealer's shelf looks just the same.

Go there first, before you return the one you have. You may decide it is just fine, after getting a look at another.

Go to the dealer and get a real one.

I was boxed into buying a Standt at an AAP and the valve actually encroached against a block casting in a Toyota ('03 Camry, I think) I was servicing.

I went way out of my way to get a real one. The difference in quality was night and day.

Don't be a dippy-doo. Buy an OE thermostat PERIOD.

That is a real one. Kuzeh makes the Toyota branded thermostats, at least some of them. That is a legit item and the coating that he's talking about is a good thing.

If that is indeed a real Kuzeh, use it. Don't use Stant/Motorad on Japanese cars, supposedly Stant now carries an "OE-match" one for imports,

Late but yes, that's a Kuzeh OEM and how they look. And they ARE much better than Stant. I would put a working Toyota OEM one back in w/200,000 miles on it instead of a new Stant. In fact I did just that 2 years ago on a car of ours.

double wasp we used them for years also but the last few years we went totally OEM after having an off brand fail more than once. Im glad you missed out on the drama we did not a couple of times. Of course even an oem could fail but they are usually a better quality stat.
