New Tahoe or used QX-80?

I can't believe people are in here recommending a 5.3 GM motor with dynamic fuel management, knowing what that does to the lifters...AND it has the 10 speed transmission.

I would take the Nissan drivetrain over the GM 6 days a week and twice on Sunday.
Was wondering when the drama would start - it’s the only reason for this thread …

I thought they had remedied the issue in recent years but need to do more research. Prefer a Mopar product but Wife does not like the Wagoneer.

Not my intention at all. I am seriously wondering how they stack up against each other. I figured they worked out the lifter issue.
Ok, owned several as have family/friends - and have tried to bring positive things to these discussions - but not in the mood for the howler monkeys that will take over this thread …

Nicely equipped Tahoes are closer to $80K.

We shopped the Tahoe/Suburban when we were looking for a car last year. Really nice. Driving experience was excellent - quiet, smooth ride. Nicely appointed inside. Tons of features.

But, and I mean this sincerely, they are a LOT of truck. The footprint is about that of my Tundra, and it can be a pain to park.

Has you wife owned/driven something that big before?

We ended up with the XC90, partly because my wife said, about the Tahoe/Suburban - “it’s too much like driving your truck”. And the three row XC90 is far easier to park, gets much better MPG, is super quiet, smooth on the road and gets far better MPG.

Wait.

I think I just recommended that you shop the XC90!

I’m quite serious. It’s a really nice vehicle, performs really well (go for the adjustable air suspension), is far easier to live with than a ginormous SUV, and is in your price range

She drives my Ram sometimes but definitely thinks it's large and not great to park. The largest vehicle She has owned was a 2010 4Runner. Would be a small learning curve.

Mazda sells some 3 row vehicles which outshine anything we offer so long as it is just a people hauler.

I've got a 3 row '20 Traverse AWD. Solid 3.6 engine, switchable AWD / FWD. Gets 26 mpg and is is not bad for a bigger SUV when in FWD.
Tons of space with the 3rd row folded down. 2nd row down it will haul stuff like a old school station wagon.

Cousin does 3 year leases on those - latest is very sharp …

I don’t find a Tahoe as hard to drive as 4 door trucks (TR-4) - and I spend more time in a Jeep Wrangler …

It’s been my understanding that the AFM on the 5.3 is still problematic?

Since you want a big SUV, have you considered a late model second gen Sequoia? I’d take that over both the Tahoe or Infiniti.

I might be interested in a CX-90 later on, but the early ones have had a lot of mechanical issues.

I'm sure they'll get it right, but I would avoid them for now.

A CX-9 with the 2.5T would probably be fine.

Down at the bottom of this thread is a related thread from member @redhat which he did an amazing review of his 2024 Tahoe. Great read and he seemed very happy with it. Looks like he traded it for a Silverado, but for reasons of wanting some truck specific things.

Spot on. I loved my 2024 Tahoe. Great trucks. My only complaint was the lack of a locking rear differential and the IRS rear end sometimes did not feel confidence inspiring in WNY winter snow, even with dedicated snows. I think it is the nature of the beast. But ride quality, handling, and overall class... second to none.

The 5.3 is really the sweetheart of the bunch. The internet will always magnify the "GM Lifter Issue". Use a higher HTHS oil, change conservatively and don't baby the thing and they'll do fine. What other large SUV do you still get the option of a NA V8 in anymore?

Mine had a 10L80 with what I think was a Gen 2 valve body. I changed transmission oil at 19k and up until 30k it had shifted flawlessly. The 10L80 demands clean fluid. No two ways about it.

Only got rid of it because it is a lot easier at this point doing home renovations with a truck bed on the way home from work versus picking up the dump trailer and heading back out. Plus, leafs out back will haul/tow better.

My 2024 Tahoe took two days on the lot before it was sold.

I had high hopes for a Durango as the pricing was hard to beat for a Hemi and RWD. The new ones are AWD unfortunately and the rear leg room is not great. For some reason I thought the middle row seats slid back but they are fixed. The 3rd row is really tight. I had gotten a large discounted price from Mark Dodge to order a 2027 Durango but the family did not think it was large enough. We went to the Chevy dealer by my office and drove an LT. It rode very nice and had decent power. Wife preferred a different color and one with a moonroof. The salesman was very nice but a bit clueless. There was a Premier with all of the specs she wanted and color right next to us and I had to point it out. We eventually got a decent offer on it as well as top trade in amount on her Wrangler (compared to Carvana) but wasn't ready to pull the trigger.

Ended up looking at a similarly equipped Yukon Elevation with the Premium package and Super Cruise. The package came with a $3k discount from the factory, it's even on the window sticker. Negotiated down another $5k after an hour of the usual back and forth and comparing the Tahoe offer with them. The Tahoe Premier with magnetic ride control and more plush seats was nice to sit in but I preferred the exterior styling of the Yukon as well as the more vertical center screen. This setup is reducing Denali sales from what I've read. The large moonroof and rear seatback media screens definitely don't feel base model. The package also includes a trailer brake controller and ventilated front seats. I believe it has a built in dash cam system as well. I like how it has rear hatch options on the key fob for opening the main hatch or just the upper glass for dropping groceries in and keeping them from falling out when getting home.

Aside from our boat this was the most illogical purchase we've ever made but the Wife loves it and feels very safe. We paid about half of the purchase price with trade in and down payment at least. Should be great for road trips especially with Super Cruise. It does not work as well as a Tesla but pretty advanced. The 5.3L has been around a while and is not without flaws but hopefully good maintenance (and maybe a DFM delete) will prevent any lifter issues. I have a large stash of 0W-20 Penn Plat but it's not Dexos approved. Will order some Mobil 1 and Carquest Premium filters.
