No new spec sheet for the synthetics yet, but thought some might be interested to see PC's SN/GF-5 'conventional oils:

http://lubricants.petro-canada.ca/resour...amp;language=en

Specs haven't changed a lot, as with others. 100C visc is up, MRV value is up, PP is down...but thats about it.

...but, as one can easily see, PC is really stretching the label of 'conventional' oil here - PP is -45! Lotsa group III in the blend, me thinks.....

If you go to the 'synthetic' section, you'll just get the pdf for these conventionals - I'll update the thread when the syn chart is up.

Happy Birthday addyguy..yes i know PC is realy great oil and used it myself. The only place i have found this stuff is at the petro canada gas station while filling up and picked up 5 1 litre bottles for my next oil change last year.dam thats pricey but had to try it as it said on the bottle synthetic like on the back. Thanks for the heads up addyguy

Happy birthday addguy - and in a sideways related post I Just (finally) found the new SN/GF-5 PDS for Pennzoil High Mileage at: http://www.epc.shell.com/
-
After selecting your language, you can click on the 'lubricant class' icon from the lower RH side of the screen rather than doing a product name search for some reason simply searched as just 'pennzoil'. PDS and MSDS will be available. I'm unsure if the SN GF-5 Pennzoil Conventional is up yet ...

I just noticed the regular supreme oil is SN rated according to their website. I have quite a few Petro points, and I think I may pickup a few 4L jugs of 10w30 supreme conventional since it will cost me nothing. It looks great with a -45C pour point!

I had looked recently on the PC website for the PDS of their synthetic grades of 0W20 and 0W30. It is no longer available for viewing. In fact there are no longer *any* PDS for their Supreme Synthetic lineup of PCMO. I would guess they are being updated

It's no suprise that PC went with the DEXOS licensing - up in Canada, 'AC Delco' oil is produced by PC, and I think FF on Canada-built GM cars is PC oil, and I think that 'Goodwrench' oil used in dealership service is PC.

Don't know about all of it, but GM and PC work together up here a fair bit - I think PC helped develop the DEX-VI spec for trans fluid, working with GM.

I have an email from PC about this, they lost at least the ATF business to Shell I believe and were not a big supplier of PCMO either. I'll see if I can dig up the email when I get home.

Take a look now at the Petro Canada lubricants site i.e.

http://lubricants.petro-canada.ca/resour...amp;language=en

The PDS for all their PCMO synthetics have been very recently updated showing the latest official specs. i.e. GF-5 and dexos 1.

The 5w30 seems to be the teacher's pet does not it?

i.e. GF-5, dexos 1, Honda HT0-06 and GM's 4718M

I don't like the changes AT ALL!

The oil is thicker across the board, and cold-cranking and cold-pumping values are up signigficantly.

Yes, pour point and TBN are better, but the whole purpose of PC is unmatched cold-weather properties, nw their values are the same as everyone else's! Cold-cranking values are up a full 1100cp!

No real reason to buy PC oils above anyone else's now.....

I am being a bit facetious but it almost makes one wonder if the previous numbers were somehow in error!

As you know PP is of little value and the TBN is just only slightly better.

So I wonder what is it about GF-5 and or dexos 1 that seems to put a hit on the cold weather stats of an oil.

Oil has to be thicker to reduce volatility, that's all there is to it. thinner base oils in the mix dramatically affect NOAK.

Since few cars actually develp the kind of temps that stess NOAK, and b/c we are in a cold climate up here where people do mostly short trips, an oil with very low crank/pump numbers is what you need, and PC USED to give us that. Not anymore!

That does seem to be the case with the 5W30. I did know that for

GF-4 PC Supreme 5W30 has/had a NOACK # of 12.1%.

The above stat. was never shown on the publically available PDS but I was told this NOACK # on two separate occasions by PC personnel so I do believe it is accurate.

Now fast forward to today:

As is now available on the PDS the

GF-5 PC Supreme 5W30 has a NOACK # of 9%.

So as you see the volatility has improved (significantly) and the cold weather specs have fallen....as you alluded to. HOWEVER this does not jive with what I know for the GF-4 and GF-5 for the PC 0W30 i.e.

GF-4 PC Supreme 0W30 has/had a NOACK # of 9.9%.

GF-5 PC Supreme 0W30 has a NOACK # of 11%. (Even slightly higher than their 0W20) ???

It is interesting to see that PC now can say they have an oil (5W30) which possesses the GM 4718M as well as the Honda HT0-06 specifications.

Definitely looks like some stout stuff for the price but I have to agree, don't think I like the loss of cold performance. Don't think it is going to stop me from getting a case of 0w30 though, which may be the SM version anyway.

Why such a drastic change? PC synthetic MRV is now only marginally better than Pennzoil Conventional 15700cP vs 15900cP.

Yes the cold temp stat's have taken a turn for the worse.
The only good news for the 0w30 is that it's VI has increased from 172 to 177.
It looks like Mobil 1 0w30 regains it'd position as the cold temp' 30wt champ with a MRV of 17,100cP. And Mobil 1's 0W-20 just consolidates it's #1 position with it's MRV of 10,400cP. For those that are interested, it's on sale now for $3.95/qt at A&A in the States.
