Has anyone else played this yet? I am by no means a gamer but when I play I really prefer the strategy type games. I saw a commercial for the new SimCity last week but was deterred by the launch price. I guess I failed to hide my enthusiasm because my wife surprised me with a copy Friday. Since I hadn’t read any reviews, just browsed for a price. I was shocked to learn that it is online only, even for single player. EA’s decision to take on of the best single player games of all time, give it very nice multiplayer capability, and parley that into a requirement that you play online at all times is ludicrous but when I could connect and play it was fun. I have not yet tried the multiplayer because I grew up playing SimCity the way it was meant to be played. If it had a true single player and a separate multiplayer option or even a subscription based service to access multi I think they would have a hit on their hands.

Wow, the last time I played sim city was in about 1994 on a Macintosh IIGS, IIRC...

ALl those sim life things got a bit much, havent paid attention back when it was popular.

Wasnt aware this was still being put out in new versions... It might be fun to play, thanks for the heads up!

It does look to be a good re-boot of the series.

However, a forewarning:

EA is currently having issues with the online capabilities in which, since the day one release, the servers have not been working correctly. Players have lost entire cities they had built while others can not even connect to the servers at all. EA has denied refunds, but has just released a big patch that fixes some bugs, but it still needs work.

The last "sim" game I played was Sim City 2000 and the original Sims. They were fun. But the ones that came later didn't seem as fun.

Typical EA, though.

Don't even bother with it right now. They are having massive server problems. Way too many users, not enough server capacity to handle it all. It's been a complete disaster, to the point where EA has offered anyone who purchases it before a certain date a free game.

Yeah, and what happens when EA decides to shut off the servers? That $60 game you bought a couple of years ago will be useless. You are just renting the game.

Got it on release but a bit fed up with how you always have to be online and all the launch issues. So fun to play, but for the price I want to be able to play it whenever I want installed on my HD.

Amazon accepted a return for a full refund, even though it is open software. Probably due to all the issues being reported.

RockPaperShotgun has been keeping very good coverage on this one:
