The newly formed Petroleum Quality Institute of America is up and running, and has published their first set of analyses. This month they covered the major brand conventional motor oils, and next month will be some independent brands.

To see the new site: http://www.pqiamerica.com/indexmain.html

To see the data table: http://www.pqiamerica.com/testresults3a.html

What makes this company different from other oil monitoring organizations is that they are dedicated to serving the consumer, rather than serving member oil companies, and all data is made public.

This site is full of interesting information. For example, if you click a test in the Physical Tests column on the left side of the table it will provide a nice description of the test procedure. And if you click on a bottle picture it will give more information on its analysis and the full product label. It's worth exploring the links.

It will be interesting to see what they provide in the coming months as well.

Thanks for posting this.

I was looking over the chart for the various brands of conventional. Does one brand stand out to any of you?

I like this chart as well...however, I don't exactly understand all the data.... All I know is there is a lot of talk asking others to compare one brand vs another. From this chart, does one conventional brand stand out above the others based on this data?

Tom, thanks for posting. If you see the PQIA Prez., tell him I'm dying to see the round-up of the synthetic brands.

If I were to use a dino I think the Mobil 5000 would be it.TBN, Noack.

Not really. It really depends on what criterion are important to you.

I'm looking forward to the synthetic comparison and hope they do a 0W-XX grade comparison as well.

oh man...I guess a lot of you were right....Valvoline is weak.
I mean, when compared to the others. It falls within their accepted range..but the lowest level of calcium of all others.

Seems I would have to choose between Castrol GTX, PYB and MC5000

I think to a degree it is a wash. For example, QS didn't have the highest moly but had very high boron. And Valvoline was lowest in calcium but highest in sodium.

I think Mobil 5000 along with all the Sopus and ExxonMobil products and Havoline looked good.

I was under the impression that Mobil used sodium, but according to this chart only Valvoline and And Castrol use sodium. If that's the case I might start using Mobil 5000 along with QS and PYB.

Well there you have it,,,,,,,,,,If its not Mobil, is aint oil,,,, and thats a wrap, drive onnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnn group.
