I still love the C126. Almost 30 years later and its still a very good looking car. Like the XKE or 911 sometimes they get designs right the first time.

Me too. Coupe and sedan.

Maybe it's just me but the angle in this pic makes it look a little like a fox body mustang and isn't as flattering to its lines... Nice car though!

Indeed, classy used to be one of the words that would frequently be used to describe MB.

Not any more, at least not imo.

What's the point of spending a lot of money on something that doesn't look classy? That interior is just garish - like the end result of a twenty four hour meth and Colt 45 fueled binge in the back row of the trailer park.

I can't imagine living with that for two weeks - much less the ten to twenty years a guy would have to keep it to justify the price tag.

Still, beauty is in the eye of the beholder. I'm sure they'll be able to lease ten or twenty thousand of them.

I like the new S class because Mercedes doesn't seem to be wanting to compete on price any longer. Its by far the most expensive out of the big German three. Heck I don't think you can even option a Lexus or a Jag much over $100k.

Here's an 87 560SEC original pricing:

$68000 in 1987 is $139446 in 2014 dollars, for a cumulative inflation of 105% per http://www.usinflationcalculator.com.

My W123 cars were obviously cheaper, but my 82 300CD was $32836, which is $79268 in 2014 dollars. So I suppose the E class has actually gotten cheaper!

$1500.00 in Gas Guzzler Taxes? I can buy a fairly good car for that.

Why should the Gov't profit from this purchase?

That's over & above Sales Taxes, then Registration, then high Insurance, then paying additional Gasoline Taxes.

Forget it!!

Going for the Bling! The logo is what is most important to many buyers. Their styling is selling to a new audience.

With over 100 servo motors that car could be a nightmare as it ages...

2002 S430 w. 145,000 miles - needs -

-- Rear Deck shade didn't ask price, but stopped working a year ago.
-- RR airmatic strut $1,700 (about one night in seven it drops down after 30 mins)
-- Motor Mounts $1,200 (dealer says they're leaking)
-- Transmission mount $694 (dealer says completely shot, collapsed)
-- 2nd air pump, hoses $1,482 (the pump doesn't work at all, and lots of hoses are cracking. Causes the CEL light to remain on)

-- oil separator $906 (dealer says is leaking)
-- all plugs + 1&5 wires $1,070 (cylinders 1&5 are cutting out intermittently)

Now you know why I've gone Buick.

That said, one of the 126 coupes in good shape would be worth fussing with, because it's just so smooth and so grand.

yes, at the dealer, the car has retail value of approximately $7K. Anyway, that was a random snippet from the internet but it does throw cold water anytime I think of picking up a good used S-Class for myself. This is only a "lowly" S430, imagine what a S500 or S600 would set one back in the maintenance cost!

How much would it ACTUALLY cost to fix, minus the stealership part costs and $165/hour labor? Nothing on that list looked all that bad except the air pump.

You have to work on them yourself. You could probably do all of that work for a couple of grand.

After the warranty period you have to find a good shop or fix them yourself, its not really practical to bring them to the dealer.

The problem with these new cars is they are so complicated you have to lease them. I wouldn't want to fix one out of warranty.

$1,200-$1,400+ with about $8k down if I remember correctly.

These cars will probably lease around $2k, since I suspect starting MSRP will be over $140k.
