New Rotella Formulation

So will the new CJ-4 Rotella T Synthetic be better or worse for motorcycles?

I heard that the new formula does not have as much zinc and phosphorus.

The reports on the new Triple Protection have been extremely good, while some of the additives have been reduced somewhat, I don't think that will be an issue.

I'm looking at it as a plus overall.

it shears faster than the older CI-4 forumla.
all of the new CJ-4 forumlas shear faster than what their CI-4 forumla did. at least in my tests. this includes SRT, delo 400 le, delvac 1300.
the fact that it shears faster than supertech 15w40 (that was used for more time) was really shocking! but the st is also the old ci-4 formula as well.

How many miles would you say the stuff is good for, based on your testing?

I ask because I've tested it at about 3K miles and I didn't find it had sheared all that badly. That was in a Goldwing.

Isn't a lower Zinc level due to the belief that it can harm a catalytic converter? If so, then that's a valid issue with me ... my Goldwing has a catalytic converter.

I think it's important to understand what "poisoning" a catalytic converter means. It doesn't mean that ZDDP will "plug up" the converter the way lead did. ZDDP will supposedly decrease the catalytic substrate's ability to "convert" the nasties in the exhaust into the not-so-nasty. You won't notice any difference in how your bike or cars runs with a "poisoned" converter. If you have to pass some sort of emission inspection, that is where you may notice a difference.

Pima County has just such an emissions test.

But I'm not all that worried because, as I understand it, the issue of zinc and the catalytic converter is really only if you have oil being consumed in the combustion chamber. My Wing -- at least for the time being -- consumes no oil.

Still ... if the CJ-4 Rotella provides sufficient anti-wear (and I believe it does) then I don't personally see a need to load up on ZDDP. I drive like a retired school marm ... my bike has no notion of what the "redline" is.
