New Prius...and free oil changes?

If they are just using a cheap conventional, just go in every 3k until 15k. Then do it yourself. This would help flush out break in metals. If it is TGMO every 5k for 25k is a great deal.

Authorized dealers service hundreds vehicles everyday, chance of anything goes wrong is very slim. I wouldn't worrying about simple oil change at authorized dealers.

My daughter 2014 Honda Accord had 4-5 free oil changes at dealer she bought her car from, nothing ever went wrong, they even washed her car after the free oil changes.

The only thing was they upsell few items, such as engine and cabin filter, tire balance/rotation ... which my daughter declined every time(I told her)

If you read and believe all the posts here on BITOG-99.9% of dealers are incompetent.

So a BITOG'r in another thread indicated he left the fill cap off when he did his OC. Plenty of latitude is given for "oil enthusiasts" and their honest mistakes; apparently none for anyone else.

I would definitely go with the dealership offered oil changes.

Boy, there sure is a lot of dealership and garage chain hate on bitog, based mostly on anecdotal evidence. In many ways it's just like many other forums out there.

The normal OCi on this vehicle is like 10,000 miles is it not? so for them agreeing to do it at 5000 with conventional is a good deal, use it.

I am not concerned about the cost savings, as it is actually more convenient for her for me to do them at home anyway.

I would be very surprised if the dealer wasn't using the Toyota brand 0W-20 for you oil changes which of course is a synthetic oil specifically designed for your car.
It's made available in bulk to all Toyota/Lexus dealers in North America and is the main oil used by Toyota/Lexus dealers in my area.

+1 They are going to use whatever oil is speced for your vehicle which I believe has to be at least a blend 0w-20. I just got my terrain changed at the dealership for free and they used AC Delco synblend Dexos. Personally I would use the free oil changes. At least that way they can't void the warranty if the maintenance was done by the dealership.

i told my dealer to keep the free oil changes on my 2015 malibu. im not worried about warranty denial, i keep all the receipts for my oil changes. plus the cap says to use 5w20 dexos but i use 0w20 because i found a TSB tht says i can use it for a top off and fill.

i dont think the dealer will use a conventional on your car, ur car requires a syn blend oil so they would not void the warranty by putting conventional oil in it.

I'd go with the free dealer changes for at least the first 15K or so, conventional or semi-syn can help seat the rings more quickly than synthetic.

I have taken all the free oil changes on my new vehicles.
Never had a problem. The Toyota dealer actually did a good, job about lubingmy drive shaft on the FJ cruiser as recommended.
I would recomend you take the free oil changed if they meet Toyotas spec for the vehicle. Mid they recomend 0w20 they should, use 0w20.
Once the freebies are past, you can change the oil if you still have a desire to tinker. It's an oil change, 5 of them is an inherent value. The car won't feel neglected if you have someone else do the labor. The car has no feelings.

Do the freebies to make sure the service work and stats are in their system.

Out of warranty, come back and we'll help you decide

We've seen multiple cases on here where posters have listed UOAs which are clearly not TGMO, but some dealer bulk.

There's nothing in a maintenance contract that would either force, nor incline them to use TGMO (or any of the half dozen versions that were made especially for this and all the other Toyota engines)...especially in a free OCI situation.

The OCI for a Prius is 10K, not 5K.

We have a 2015 Prius. Our Toyota dealer uses 0w-20 TGMO, and the OCI is 10,000k. At 5,000 intervals they inspect the vehicle, top off fluids if needed and rotate tires only. Try reading your maintenance interval manual that comes with the vehicle. For an oil change etc. we are usually in and out in about a half hour.

To each their own on this subject. My 2015 Prius came with the same free maintenance that you describe... but I opted to skip. Maybe I'm weird, but I enjoy getting underneath my car to check things out myself... and the Prius is such an easy oil change - I can have it done in 20min with most of that time spent cleaning up after myself.

As someone else pointed out - you definitely DO NOT have to use their free maintenance to maintain warranty, but you should maintain any and all receipts for future "proof" of services performed. And as long as you use the proper grade of oil (0w20 in this case) with a correct oil filter - there's really not much to mess up.

Congrats on your purchase by the way!

TGMO isn't a Mobil derivative everywhere in the world?

Same thing for our 2013 Prius. I thought it was a good deal and let them do the service. Now that the offer has expired I do my own oil change with Mobil1 0W-20AFE or TGMO

Some people think the dealership is a safe, cozy little place where your car receives expert care from engineers and conscientious technicians.

I watched as a degenerate employee with a scorpion tattoo on his neck moved my brand new car maybe 200 feet from one side of the parking lot to the other at probably 80% throttle.

Noooo thank you.

The Toyota dealer around had a long standing $12.95 oil change deal. I'm sure they were pumping TGMO in your Toyota if you brought it down.

There's no way I'd go 10K mile OCI unless I watched them open bottles and pour in.

Ya, the Toyo dealer here charges $60 for TGMO 0w20. Recently did a UOA after 10k miles and the results were very good. Here's the uoa:

No, there's a good handful around the world, and there were multiple different oils by different manufacturers through the history of TGMO even in the US, one of them being not particularly shear stable, in one study that I've seen losing 7-8% of it's HTHS in 400 miles.

But that being said, CATERHAM in his studies, assures us that all of the TGMO variants, in spite of their quite different make-ups were all designed specifically for your Toyota (regardless of engine family, displacement, or platform)
