LAS VEGAS – Emerging fuel efficient powertrain technologies such as turbocharged direct injection engines will increase the need for improvements in powertrain lubricants, Daniel Kapp, Ford’s director of powertrain research and advanced engineering, told the Society of Tribologists and Lubrication Engineers annual meeting.

“Because of the higher specific loads, and all the strain on the oil system if you will, we may be looking forward to a 0w30 as more effective than a 5W-20,” he explained. “Those are some of the things we’re working through.”

Direct injection, turbocharging, AND a 10,000 mile OCI?
Yep, a XXw30 oil would be the way that I would go as well.
5W20 is a great oil for a number of applications, but if you're going to have a fuel dilution scenario, I wouldn't run anything less then a 30, especially on an extended drain interval.

I would think the HTHS numbers they are looking for along with lower viscosity at 40C for better fuel mileage would almost require a 0W30.

You CAN make a synthetic-blend 0W-30, so oils wouldn't have to change THAT much - many oils already are group II, II+ and III blends.

Also, with modern VII's and PPD's, I wouldn't be suprised if an 'all group II+' 0w30 couldn't be made.....

Why would you need to back-spec a 30 weight?
I used M1 0w30 in the van back when it was new, reasoning that the 0W could only be a good thing, while the 30 at operating temperature would be more or less equal to that of a 5w30.
What could possibly be wrong with using a 0w30 in a 5w30 app, or for that matter, 0W-20 in a 5W-20 app.

ABSOLUTELY NOTHING! It still astounds me why some recommend 10w30.

Because some people live in areas where in never gets below freezing and want less plastic and more oil in their engine.

That makes no sense.

We both did! Bring it on!

LOL!

and the best part is....

SSO made my valve train so quiet that if it wasn't for the exhaust and injector tapping, you would think the engine wasn't even running.

Someone tell me again why I was running 5W-20?
