New, New York license plates look nice

The new ones seem to have a very 'retro' look to them.

The old ones look very much like Ontario plates, so they look familiar.

Well, I'll readily admit that I'm biased ON THIS POINT (only), but Florida has THE coolest selection of custom plates out there (although an absurdly huge number of them...). Here's mine, with the last two characters swirled out for privacy purposes.

I like the new look; it's classic. IIRC, Indiana has had FIVE plate changes since I mailed my NYS Liberty plates back in 2001. I think orange and blue is pretty good combo. The orange and blue that the NYSP has going is pretty hot, especially on the helos. The one thing I might change is perhaps reducing the amount of orange, perhaps just orange lettering against the navy blue. It could be worse though. Do we have any Buckeyes here? :D

Hmmmmmmmmm, orange and blue... That would be an especially righteous combo down here in Florida.

Go Gators!!!

hmm....I thought Indiana was on a 4 or 5 year cycle?

Indiana's "Wander" plate is probably the most hideous one I've even seen.

IDK, but off the top of my head, there's the old dark amber waves of grain, the white with the state shield, green grass, and now the blue with white boarder. That's four but there is also the In God We Trust which is a no additional fee alternative plate. It seems like it takes a good 3 years for all the plates to get changed out, too. I remember when I was in the BMV getting my plates and drivers license in 2000 there was a kid getting plates to replace the amber waves one that wikipedia says expired in 1998.

There is a story behind that Yellow/Blue NY plate.

The governor wanted to recall all the old plates in the middle of a depression, and charge each person something like 75 dollars for the new plates.

The TV stations were revolting, and there were darn near riots in the streets.

A few months later they changed their tune, and just released the new plates to new cars/registrations for "no" extra charge.

I could care less, but I try to give Albany as little money as possible, I will keep my old plates until i move out of this state, which hopefully is soon.

Dislike. They're awful. The colors clash with each other, and look hideous on every car they're on. I have yet to see a car I like the look of those plates on.

I like the last design much better. The Liberty plates were the best, though. It was a tasteful way of reminding people you're from New York. The current plates announce it like the Jersey Shore cast, aka loudly and as obnoxiously as possible.

Not sure why you do that when you have renewal stickers and in some cases inspection stickers.

Because the new NYS plates will generate around $135 million in fees. You think they're giving them out for free? $25 plate fee, $50 if you want to keep the same number on the new plate.

Since NYS and ON have reprocity for driving infractions, maybe Ontario will see the light for yet another lucrative source of funding. :)

We pay $180 every 2 years for a renewal sticker and $35 for an emission test and then $75 every 5 years for a drivers license renewal and we don't get any new plates ours rust and fall off like they did on my van and I got a $110 fine and I didn't even know I had lost it earlier that day.

This is what our rear plate on the vehicle looks like for a personal vehicle under 4500 KG.

The sticker in the right corner tells you when it expires and needs to be renewed on your birthday of that year at the latest.

This is what they used to look like before the change

Here are the plates I kept for my collection of course mostly ohio (I hate this state and always will):

I just realized I don't have one (anymore) of the 15 year old "design" of dark blue letters on white/gold bottom ohio.

That is why they make plates out of aluminum, they last MUCH longer.

The reflective coating is another thing. I've had to replace mine because it went and they did not charge me for that. Had to get a new number though.

Our new ones are aluminum but aren't painted they have like a vinyl overlay on the letters and white background (see above). It peels off after about 10 years or so coming into contact with road salt and such.

When we moved here in '78 the tags were aluminum. Then one of the idiotic governors got the lame-brain "idea": "Ohio is a steel-producing state; our plates should be steel."

Not that I'm aware of. What it does produce is high taxes and no workers to pay them. I'm voting against the (guy) in Governor's office now come November.

i registerd a new to me car today and had no plates to transfer, cost be 128.50, 25 for the plates, 50 for a title and rest the 2 year reg fee.
