I have a Flowmaster 80 on my Grand Am. Stock manifolds, cat, resonator yada yada yada. It sounds GREAT but the dang drone is really getting to me. Not too man options with the crossflow design muffler. I had a Magnaflow on my Z28. It was pretty tame until you got on it. Anyone have any experience with Dynomax Super Turbo? I'm leaning more towards the Magnaflow since it's stainless steel. On the other hand the Dynomax is roughly $40 cheaper. I've scoured youtube and there's very little difference between the two externally. Anyone have any suggestions between the two?

I have a Dynomax Super-Turbo. It has a slightly deeper tone than stock, but is barely noticeable. It is perfect in my opinion, since a loud exhaust just screams "look at me" and gets annoying after awhile, especially on long trips.
Eventually everyone outgrows the "hot car in town" thought process.Remember,sound doesnt substitute for speed/horsepower/acceleration.Just ponder,a 58 Edsel Corsair/Citation could probably accelerate right along with you (and the Edsel would be near silent doing it).

How loud is a Magnaflow. I would only get it because it was SS, but I would not want it noticeably louder than stock.

Yup, which is why I immediately sold the axle-back exhaust I purchased for my old STI. when I dumped it I realized how great the stock exhaust sounded, especially considering the drone of the aftermarket exhaust drown out the fantastic, addictive sound of the turbo spoiling, even with minor throttle input.
So, unless you go with a fully custom, fully expensive option designed specifically to make your platform sound its best, you'll always find yourself wanting something different. JMO

Droning has to do with an improperly designed exhaust system: resonator + muffler combination is not effective. That's what happens with a lot of aftermarket exhausts because they just slap a muffler on some tubing.
I've also replaced our replacement muffler with a Walker SS Quiet Flow on our 90 Geo Prizm
It's almost as quiet as the original that came on that vehicle. We previously had the shop install just an ordinary muffler and could not believe how loud it was for just a replacement. I find these shop replacement mufflers are loud. Is it because they're just junk?

Yes they are probably using cost effective replacements if you don't pay for a premium one. I would want a good muffler going on my vehicle if I was going to replace it. My Century actually needs one but we have a reputable muffler shop in town and they stock MagnaFlow so I might go with one of the models that claim minimal interior resonance since I like to hear a little something.
If I was going with a shop and providing parts I would probably buy the walker off rock autoand ju st pay for labor.

I put a Walker Quiet Flow on the xB last week, and I love it.
Magnaflow would be my pick. I've had on on everything from a 2.0 Neon, 4.6 3V Ford, 5.7 Hemi. It sounded great in all. Even the Neon wasn't raspy or obnoxious. It was a deep tone -- not farty and all.
When I had my Saturn, I originally had a Magnaflow 4 inch diamater muffler where the resonator was, and a Flowmaster Hushpower as the muffler. It gave me great performance gains.
It wasn't as loud as most modified cars, but I got tired of it.
I left the Magnaflow in the place of the resonator, but I swapped in the biggest Dynomax Super Turbo that I could get from Summit racing. It was just a little louder than stock. Power levels didn't feel any different from when I had the Flowmaster hushpower. I am sure if I had a very precise dyno, I could find a difference.
So I say use a Dynomax Super Turbo.
There is one thing I don't like about them. I never found one that was made of stainless steel.

Not quite sure what you mean by "flair," but here's the story behind my xB: the flange rusted & gasket failed where the resonator pipe and muffler meet. I decided to replace the resonator pipe and muffler, since they'd seen 9 years and 150k+ miles of Midwest weather. I ordered everything from Amazon, and with gasket & clamps, it cost about $160 shipped.
I used a sawzall to cut the pipe just in front of the weld between the OE resonator and cat. The end of the Walker resonator pipe was flared just enough to slide over the pipe coming from the cat, and the recommended exhaust clamp secured it well. Fit for both resonator pipe and muffler were perfect, and new setup has the car as quiet as it's been in the nearly 3 years & 60k miles I've owned it. I haven't noticed any difference in performance. I was more interested in quiet, since the engine in the xB drones at 3500 RPM at 70 mph in 5th gear.
I may or may not spend the extra $15 for a chrome tip. I haven't decided yet.
The online catalog at Walker's web site will outline everything you need. There's also a $50 Visa prepaid card rebate for QuietFlow purchases between 4/1 and 5/31 that I just missed out on. Bummer for me. Bonus for you.

"Flair" meaning, the internal design of the muffler is supposed to be more efficient by design(without extra noise) than other replacement mufflers including OE. Whether it actually works or makes any difference is probably vehicle dependent. That's all I meant!

Well, now it becomes price dependent due to the fact that the QF doesn't come in SS for my app. Only galvinized! So, I may just use a standard galvinized replacement w/lifetime warranty as well. We'll see!
Dyno max superturbo, the largest one that will fit, or the walker quietflow is what I recommend. Magnaflow = drone although the ss is nice.
