New Mobil 1 5w30 ESP Formulation?

Mobil1 ESP 5w30 New Version 2024 COF = 0.181
This can be interpreted as an equal sign. That is, the organic friction modifier here is decent. Replaces molybdenum and eliminates the slight ash content and deposits associated with molybdenum."
did they mention the name of this new friction modifier?

Take this with a grain of salt...there is something unique about the M1 5w30 ESP SP oil IMO.

This is the Canadian version, (2024). The ESP changed some time in 2023 discovered first on the ROC as in the OP. However I don't know if the moly-less, ester-less version has been in the US yet.....Per ROC, one guy speculated it may contain mPAO.

I wonder if that <5 1 decene is the mPAO. Pure speculation. Not sure if the CAS number would be different for PAO vs mPAO.

So what is the current opinion on Mobil 1 ESP 5w-30 versus Mobil 1 ESP 0w-30? I have two BMWs out of warranty, but lean toward the LL-04 spec (or LL-01)...but should I use the 0w-30? Is it considered "better"?

I think the honest answer is no one knows. The 0w30 looks better by conventional standards on paper, but maybe the 5W-30 has unicorn tears that don't show up simple spectral analyses. I am partial to the ESP X4 0W-40 if you are going off label anyway but that's just me and it is not available in 5 Qt/5 L.

Yeah, being kinda "thrifty" I prefer getting the xW-30 versions when I can get them for $23 to $24 per jug online with free shipping.
Is there really much difference other than the higher viscosity/HTHS? I'm good with the HTHS on the xW-30 versions meeting my cars needs.

Google AI says the cas number is just conventional PAO but take that with a grain of salt i guess

This^. Hard to say for the reasons you listed. With less metallic additives being used and things not visible via a VOA, it's really anyone's guess. It still meets stringent approvals so it's still a great oil.
