Greetings,

We are picking up a new 2010 Mazda CX-9 for my wife on Monday. It has 15 miles or so on it. When should I dump the factory fill and how long should I stay with dino before switching to synthetic? Oil cap says 5w-20...stick with that grade on the 3.7 liter? Hope to keep for many years so I want to treat it well.

Thanks in advance!

Follow what the manual says for OCI. You should leave the factory fill at least 3K. Keep using 5W20, you don't want Mazda giving you excuses to not honor the warranty if something goes wrong.

If the manual says 5k OCI, I'd stick to dino. Motorcraft 5W20 is excellent stuff. If 7.5k or more, then you can go syn and a good filter like P1. After the warranty, use to your heart's content.

Have you had a chance to read the manual yet? What are the OCI's? I'd stick with conventional if you just plan on doing 3-4k changes. Good deals can be found on synthetics, but it really depends on the interval you will be doing.

I'd change out the first fill according to the manual. Some people do it a lot earlier, but there isn't really a need for that if it's not called for.

I haven't read the manual yet...being under warranty I will stick with what it says for oil change intervals. If I did want to switch to a less expensive sythetic like Quaker State Syn HP or whatever the current name is should I wait to a certain mileage?

Again, FOLLOW the manual. Your car is under WARRANTY. Now, if you're bent on going syn, then be my guest. You WANT to spend more money on syn on 5k or shorter OCI, again, your money.

Syn makes sense IF you want long OCI's AND no longer under warranty OR you just want to feel better using syn. Today's dinos are incredibly good. Your engine is a Ford, Duratec. MC 5W20 is PERFECT for 5k OCI.

Your call.

No need to wait any length of time or mileage to switch to any brand of synthetic. After you dump your factory fill(FF) you can go straight to synthetic if you want!

Have fun with your new CX-9; we love ours! Factory fill is Quaker State syn-blend I believe (at least is was with our '07). OCI is 5,000 miles unless you do all highway driving in a non-dusty environment which is then 7,500 miles. I used the 2 free dealer oil changes then went to 5w-20 Mobil 1.

Picking up on Tuesday now...going to use Motorcraft filters and probably Motorcraft Blend 5w-20 every 5k. I hope it is as reliable as our 06 Subaru Tribeca was/is.
