No way I would pay that amount for an Apple product. I have a Samsung Galaxy S4 that performs just fine. I also own a 4th generation iPad that has got worse, performance wise, with each IOS update.
No way I'm buying a $1200 iphone. I've got no complaints running a 5s that was introduced nearly 5 years ago. I'm sure a few years from now I'll be happy with the $1200 iphone for $200.
That's just crazy! Everyone has different phone needs, but cripes! I signed up for Republic Wireless 18 months ago and my total...yes, total...expenditure since day one is around $485. Phone, plan, SD card, taxes/fees. But, I am not a "typical user". No Snapface, Bookchat, Twittime, etc.
I'm sure we'll see large lines waiting to get a hold of the latest version.

I can render 1080p HD videos, create budgets, take incredible pictures (before my lens cracked, anyway) and communicate with people around the world on my iPhone 6. I see no reason to upgrade.
I gave up and purchased a Pixel. I wanted plain simple straight up Android because I do some of my own smart phone programming and I have a lot of little features that suit me. Others have "improved" Android and it's annoying. I paid a lot but the pain is over and I really like the phone.
I looked at Apple but was told that I was stupid if I did not buy into the Apple way. So I stayed stupid.

Where Apple goes, others follow. Apple keeps testing the upper limit of cost and mass sales. Other manufacturers price their phones to suit. So this has an effect on the Android market where prices will also trend upwards.

My last phone was a Galaxy S3, which I bought shortly before the S6 came out, for $0.99 new on Amazon, with a re-up on my Verizon plan. That $0.99 phone lasted me for about 3.5 years.

New Galaxy S-7-Edge phone - They wanted $40 a month for 24 months. I got them down to $28 a month. (Yes, I know, that's still $672 - keep reading).
My plan WAS working out to about $140 a month, between my wife's phone and my phone, our data allowance and usage, etc.. I got them to up my data plan AND drop the monthly bill down to a hair over $100 / month.
Net result - I'm SAVING money, and still getting a MUCH bigger, MUCH more powerful phone.
No way in heck I would ever pay $1200 for a phone.. and especially not an Apple phone.

Where Apple goes, others follow. Apple keeps testing the upper limit of cost and mass sales. Other manufacturers price their phones to suit. So this has an effect on the Android market where prices will also trend upwards.

The key is not buying the one with a Terabyte of storage. I usually buy the one with the second to the lowest or lowest amount of storage I feel I need. Many people can't seem to live without having a million songs and 90 GB of pictures on their phone.
I had friends in college who said they couldn't afford a car, but always had the latest iPhone and Macbook.

You are absolutely correct - and the updates are mandated because of security issues that they won't divorce from feature updates that slow down older models. Because if they do that, then people might actually get five or more years out of their phone, and that would be a disservice to Apple shareholders.
Apple:
I don't want GarageBand. I don't want three-D effects. I don't want anything special. I want a phone that can do the following:
1) Browse the Web
2) Play YouTube videos when I want
3) Fetch my email
4) Take quality pictures and video
5) Use as a GPS
That's it. And my old iPhone 4S did those tasks just fine, but had to be rendered obsolete by software updates that made it too slow to use.
I hate this greed.

It amazes me that in other threads there's talk of millennials who have little money. There is no mandate and nobody is putting a gun to your head, making you buy an expensive phone. I'm a firm believer in supply and demand.
My choice is to keep my flip phone. My life is not much less than others because of it. I can't see spending more money on a phone than my winter beater is worth.

So many excellent Android phones out there for around $200, I can't see spending this kind of money for something that gets lost, stolen, dropped and worn out in 2 years or less. Smartphones are a mature product now, upgrading every year or buying the super high end just doesn't make sense.

I don't see what the big hoopla is, even if it is true. People are free to spend their money how they want to.
There is definitely room in market for a high end phone. The iPhone does not have to be a mass market item. They can improve the iPhone 7->7s and leave a luxury model that eventually will inevitably drop in price.
My daughter 9 has a low end $99 prime phone(no phone plan) as her MP3 player basically and honestly Android is another in another world. Useable but another world compared to my wife's iPhone SE and my iPhone 7 and even wife's old iPhone 5 my 11 year old uses as iPod and loathes due to mediocre camera.

Really like the battery life, and responsiveness.

If I had to pay list(the deal wasnt there) price $700+
it would have been a clearance purchase when the S9 came out.. or some other clearance phone.
Ie last years flagship for 40% or less of the list price.

What's the big deal? Many BITOG's buy cars in the $45K+ range when other cars can be had for less, but they aren't held to the same standard as Iphone buyers?
