I thought it was lame. He lost me at the part where he says the only function of motor oil in the past was to lubricate the engine. It's always been to lubricate, cool, carry away debris, and serve as a hydraulic fluid. Bearings ride on a hydrodynamic wedge that is compromised by foam. Foam in your bearings is catastrophic. Oh, and those hydraulic lifters have been around for a while too.
Oh, and the implication that no other oil will go 5000 miles.

Did you really listen well enough to the video? He did NOT say that the only function of motor oil in the past was to lubricate the engine. In fact, he goes on to say that the oil also functions in cooling the pistons and in the hydraulic variable valve timing mechanism. Also, he describes the antifoaming additives in the oil. In the end of the video he summarizes these 3 main points: the oil lubricates, cools and is active in the hydraulics of the valve timing. Fer crying out loud, give the guy more credit.
Uh-oh, Ed, looks like I goofed. I've looked more closely at what you wrote, and didn't at first mind much your attachment of "in the past", which just about reversed what I perceived you'd said. My apologies.
modularv8: I appreciate this being brought to our attention, and please don't take ofense, but.....
I thought it was lame too. Not so much for any informational faux pas... it was just lame. Too "folksy" and not enough detailed info. Lubricant kindergarden, as it were. I don't like Barney either!
I thought it was very well done. Remember who this was aimed at. It's not for us who have a good idea of regular engine maintainance, but for the general public who know little about the reason oil needs to be changed in the first place.
I'm sure it wasn't intended for the people who frequent this site, but the average car owner that only knows where the key goes and does what Jiffy Lube tells him to do. For them lm sure it was informative.
