It’s supposed to be 80 f in Phoenix this weekend. New record apparently.

It was 80F when I went to lunch yesterday. I was shocked coming out of the meat locker of a parts department.
Is this unusual?

No, it is not. It is warmer than normal here, and it may hit a record for that date, but it can happen all winter long. It can also get quite cold, for us. Coldest I have seen here is 10 degrees F. Warmest around 114.

Records are made to be broken. 
They will continue to be broken as long as the city continues to grow. More concrete and asphalt, more buildings add heat to the city. The cities then do not cool down at night causing higher temps during the day.Records are made to be broken.

I'll be at the Bengals game up here in Cincy on Sunday and our high temperature is forecast to be 12F. This after the 3-5 inches of snow we are supposed to get tonight and the 1-3 they are forecasting for Saturday afternoon.
The Paycor stadium ground crew will have fun scraping my frozen corpse off my seat late Sunday afternoon after the game.

Yes, proven fact. Heat retention is a big deal.
What does the Month have to do with city heat retention. I travel into Bismarck, may be -10 degrees 2 miles out of town and when I get into town it may be Zero. That's on days without wind. The official thermometer is at the airport which is center of town and as the city grows the more heat is retained. Doesn't matter the month of year.
Central Texas will have to settle for the low 70s. Great with me.
Solar insolation is a big part of of the phenomenon and it’s not a big player right now. Have a look at a weather map and you’ll see the towns outside of Phoenix are presently warmer than Phoenix. Its actually a weather system coming up from Mexico.
