Just bought a new vehicle, and coming up on my first oil change after break in period (1000kms). Mazda 2.5 non turbo skyactive engine. Anyways I was debating between Mobil 1 extended performance and pennzoil ultra platinum, but then I came across this valvoline restore and protect stuff. It sounds great, but not sure if it’s meant for just older high mileage vehicles, or if I can also put it into a basically new engine. Thanks in advance.

Regular Mobil 1 or any other good synthetic.
there is really nothing special or magical about Mobil 1,there are many other good oils on the market, are you doing your own oil changes or dealer? and if so you probably will use the dealer supplied oil. myself found PUP is a very good oil to use at proper oci,.

Someone here obviously doesn't like Mobil 1 and feels the need to knock others' recommendations before offering their own.

Just pick whichever you choose and change your oil on time. Keep in mind that it is Direct Injected, so keep the OCI's sensible in relation to the type of driving you do. The Mazda 2.5L is easy on oil otherwise.

Regular Mobil 1 really isn’t something that I would recommend to anyone simply because for just a couple of bucks more they could get one of Mobil 1s better offerings like ESP, EP, Truck and SUV or the new Advanced Clean
It’s the same with Pennzoil, I wouldn’t recommend Platinum when Ultra Platinum is only a few bucks more.

Agree. Far too many slight Mobil 1 without reasonable cause. I'm a believer in Mobil 1 and their EP oils and have used them for many years. I'm also using Pennzoil Euro 5w30 in my sons Subaru FB25 engine....the price was excellent. It's a good oil. Once done with the stash, you guess it....back to the tried and true Mobil 1.
Yeah, I guess I’m losing my filter. Normally I just ignore peoples passive/aggressive slights of other peoples recommendations and move on, but here lately, I give it back.
If someone asks for recommendations, people should give one if they feel so inclined, but they shouldn’t knock someone else’s recommendation before giving their own.
In the end, the people asking for recommendations are gonna get every brand mentioned, and still have to pick one.
I think it would be really good if someone would use Restore and Protect in a new engine, and report back here in several years! If you plan on sticking with that oil, and plan on hanging around on BITOG for a while, that would be a good "long term" test of that product.

Buy whichever of the three is cheaper in 0W-20.
There should be a page within your owner's manual that shows which motor oil should be used given a certain temperature range.
I would be inclined to think that 0w-20 would be recommended for you, but you should check that page which is available online to make sure.
In terms of the brand, the easiest thing to do is find out what the oil certification is for your particular brand. For example, GM vehicles tend to have Dexos certifications available which are guaranteed to meet the needs of their engines.
Finally, if you change your oil yourself, there is a section of our site called, 'Product Rebates and Promotions' which will provide you with deals during the course of the year on motor oil and other products.
Sometimes you'll also see posts related to clearances and unusual deals as well on other areas of our site too.
For example, Advance Auto Parts just liquidated a large part of their inventory due to a restructuring. A lot of those components ended up at RockAuto under their 'Famous Brand' listings. Oil filters were going as cheap as $0.53 and other components were substantially discounted as well.

You could put Valvoline Restore and Protect in a new car, but there's no need. I recommend Mobil 1 ESP because I think it's even better than the other excellent oils you mentioned. As an added benefit (beyond great lubrication) Mobil 1 ESP is excellent at cleaning. So your engine would stay very clean, especially if you change oil at 5000 miles. Whatever oil you choose, I recommend 5K oil change.
All the oils you mentioned are excellent choices, but I'd give the edge to Mobil 1 ESP.
There are many good filters to choose from. NAPA Gold is my favorite filter.
For all oils mentioned, Walmart usually has best prices. Sometimes Amazon or auto store sales too. Walmart might have a Black Friday sale for oil. Otherwise, Walmart often has sales on Tues & Weds most weeks. See Walmart's website, Amazon, and NAPA website for sales.

I would run Valvoline Restore and Protect from day 1 and never look back.
I'm a diehard Mazda fan and have had 9 so far. Currently have two newer ones. My first with skyactiv motor was a 2014 6. At the time Mazda pushed high moly content oils. Even today their branded oils contain very high moly content as does your factory fill . Based on that I have stuck with higher moly content oils which include QS full syn and Valvoline advan full syn. While not the darling boutique oils (more expensive) some advocate here they serve mazda motors quite nicely (in reality Mazda motors aren't too pickey with regards to oil, but I have found a few that caused the valve train to be a little nosier). You won't find much in the way of negative comments about either as well. They're both just good competent oils that are readily available and budget friendly. Both my 25 3 and cx30 use Quaker State Full Synthetic 0w20 as have my past 3, 6, and cx5 (turbo cx5 used 5w-30 QS full syn). zoom zoom!
4,500 mile OCIs for the win. Get a MityVac extractor and swap the filter every 2nd service. Your Mazda will thank you. And reward you.
