Thats funny I was having a conversation with my dealer friend a while back about syns in Harley's and he didn't mention anything and he is pretty up to date on this stuff. Of course that doesn't mean they aren't doing it. I wonder if maybe a local dealership was going to carry Belray or Amsoil and this was passed on and confused. I think it would be great if they started using and/or promoting a good group 4 oil. You could still use the group 2 or blend. It would certainly help ease those old "no syn oil in Hd's" rumours and I think it would be a better oil for the op temperatures. People also could possibly go to at least the OEM drain recomendation of 5K (A lot of guys I know use OEM or Kendall oil and only go 2-3 K usually 2500. Your supposed to change all three (eng, trans, primary) lubes at 5k (8000km) but most owners I know do oil at 2500 (4000km) and then all again at 5000(8000km). They explain it to me as they think they cooked the oil and don't want sludge, and I think some are right but most are probably just treating their bike to fresh oil that is not yet needed. I would like to do analysis on one of my friends bikes with OEM oil/filter at a couple K's or even up to the 5 HD recommends if they leave it in that long. I am goin to do it on my bike with AMSOIL 20W50 when I change to my second batch of AMSOIL in a few months. Would like to see a virgin analysis, maybe 2500 and then the recommended 5000 miles with one filter either OEM,K&N, or AMSOIL. If it looks really good around 5000 then maybe I will change filter top up and keep going with more analysis or if not change when recommended by lab.
Off topic, I will probably do the same with my 84 GM with rebuilt 350, and try for AMSOILS 25,000 mile or one year with their 12,500 M filters. I will probably see the year end first though.
