Hello Everyone! Just a Quick question to see if i'm making the right choices for my vehicles.

My 2006 Grand Marquis has 48,000 miles on it. I use 5-20 QSUD and a wix filter. It has an extended warranty so i have to use 5k OCI's. It is driven about 10-12k a year 70% highway. I don't beat on the car, but i like to "open her up" now and then.
My wifes 2005 Impala 3.4L has 90,000 miles on it. I use mobilHM 5-30 and a wix filter. It also has an extended warranty that doesnt expire until 125k miles so I have to use the 5k OCI's. She puts about 30k a year on the car thats about 90% highway. Same thing, the car isn't beat on but it gets opened up now and then.

Am I making good choices? Whats your opinions? I know I may get bashed for spending a little more for synthetic on mine at such a short OIC interval but QSUD is only a few dollars more for a 5 gallon jug than Pennzoil conventional. The Wix filters I use are $6 at orielly's. Is there a better filter i should b e using in that price range?

Thanks!

Good choice in oil filters for sure Wix,Purolater all good. Not knocking QS but, if it were me I would use Valvoline or Castrol. I know QS could have gotten better but, I have seen many engines left dirty by it not just sludge but, varnish too. Get you oil as hot as you can drain it all night and thats about the best your going to be able to do. Hope this helps.

I think on the mercury,i would get a motorcraft FL-820 at walmart, oil will be cheaper there as well if you are not already getting it there.Good choice on oil, however you can get motorcraft 5w20 at walmart for around 14.50 for 5 quart jug and it would be a perfect combo for the mercury.

Is the motorcraft filter as good as the wix? They are $4 at walmart around here. I know 10 years ago I worked for murrays auto parts (it was taken over by orielly). Back then motorcrafts were made by purolator. Are hey still?

Every engine I've ever used QS in, dino or syn, has been squeeky clean.

As far as I can tell, they still are. I use MC 820's on my 5.4L truck and FL300's in my Jeep. Awesome filter for the money. I've also had good success with the NAPA Pro-Selects in my 5.4L when I came across a decent oil/filter deal.

I think your maintenance plans sounds great and you shouldn't change a thing. I was raised to believe QS was junk, but I use it now because of the simple fact that Shell bought them back in the early 2000s and the cleanest engine I've ever seen with my own eyes was with a conventional dino Shell motor oil and QS is a step up from Shell. I like Wix and Pure One filters, so you have a solid plan.

I buy the Mobil High Mileage for the wifes, it only 13.50 a jug at wally world. Is it good oil as well? is there better in the near price range?

That's a fine oil and will continue to serve you well. My wife has an '04 Maxx 3.5L which has spent most of it's life on Supertech dino (the Exxon/Mobil version). If the engine has no leaks, I might even step back to regular Mobil dino (clean 5000 or "Super", whatever they call it now).

+1!!

I KNOW you have a great thing going (at least as it comes to oil and filter, OCI) NO NEED TO CHANGE A THING!!

QS oil had an issue back in the '70's and that has lead people to think that there is an issue with the oil.
Their additive issue is WAY in past history and there is no issue with their oil as compared to most any other name brand oil out there.
I don't use it......but would not have any worries about using it in my vehicle.

The maintenance program that you are following is great.
I have bought WIX filters from Rockauto, but one needs to buy a few of them to make it cost effective so that your savings are not all eaten up by shipping cost.
As mentioned, Motorcraft filters are also well respected.

I would also mention to keep up on all the other maintenence items, as I am sure that you are doing.......power steering fluid (ATF in the FORD), coolant, ATF........

For the filter, I would go with the Motorcraft with
The silicone anti drainback valve. I had a Wix cause too high oil pressure on one engine and cause leaks everywhere. The only oil I EVER had fail on me was Valvoline. It turned to just about water in less than 1000 miles and caused a lot of valve noise. I must add this was 20 years ago but: Fool me once shame on you, fool me twice shame on me... just my opinion of course.

For 5,000 mile OCI's in the Mercury the best bang for the buck is Motorcraft 5W-20 & a Motorcraft FL820S oil filter bought at Walmart. But what you're doing is fine for a few bucks more. Over the 5,000 mile OCI you're talking about pennies or less per mile difference. Quaker State Syn is reasonably priced at Walmart and it might keep you engine cleaner, even in the 5,000 mile OCI.

With your GM vehicle, unless it's using oil I'd stick with standard or blend 5W-30 oil and a good filter, such as you're using or a GM filter if it's less costly for your 5,000 mile OCI's.

Whimsey

While what your doing is overkill its not going to hurt anything.

Im a cheapskate.
Merc GM - MC 5W20 / MC FL820S
Chevy Impala - Supertech HM 5W30 (I really like the new formula) / Delco.

Me too. For that 5k routine I'd go Motorcraft oil and filter.
Nothing wrong with your regimen, just a better value IMHO if you are going to stay at that mileage interval.
