The downside to this strategy is that the car rides a bit rougher, but I am willing to put up with that. Plus, I really prefer crisp steering response, which you also get with more inflation pressure.

I do similar for all my cars. All my cars have 2-6 psi above recommended pressure, specially when I go on long trips I inflate the tires up to 8 psi above recommended but never exceed max tire pressure on sidewall.

The car ride is firmer but the steering respond is crisper and better hydro resistance on standing water, also better gas mileage and less prone to blow out.

HTSS,

But at 8 PSI above recommended pressure are you risking tire failure at highway speeds do to that much pressure ?

The max pressure on side wall of 235/45-17 Z rated tires are 51 PSI, the recommended pressure on fuel filler door of E430 is 32F/33R for speed below 100 MPH, I had 40F/43R which is still 8-10 PSI below max. I found that at these pressures the car is very stable at speed above 80-85 MPH with some short burst of 110-120 MPH, with full load of 4 person and luggage through death valley in summer.

Around town, I lowered to 36F/38R rear to get softer ride.
