I agree. One of the main reasons I like the Rotella product is the JASO-MA rating for the 15W40 and 5W40. If my bike was back spec'd down to a 30 weight, I think I'd be more likely to try out Rotella's 10W-30 (not rated) because of its JASO-MA rated siblings.
 
hhmmm...might be an alternate to motorcycle 10w-30 oil

there are a few heavy duty oils in various places that I might consider; they do not have the API starburst nor 'energy conserving'/'resource conserving' rating & they are designed for diesel engines (heavy duty engine oil); among these are:

Shell Rotella T-5 10w-30 synblend, Chevron Delo 400 XLE 10w-30 synblend, and Motorcraft Heavy Duty 10w-30

another way to look at this...how many owners of Honda Rebel 250's (or other common sump bikes) use 10w-40 passenger car oil (no API starburst, no 'energy conserving'/'resource conserving' ratings) and have had little or no trouble with their bikes year after year; my favorite bike shop uses Castrol 10w-40 or 20w-50 pcmo in common sump bikes (unless the customer requests something different)...they have done it for years with no bad issues;

[censored]...I often run a mix of leftover oils (10w-40/15w-40 pcmo's, hdeo's, motorcycle oils) at the end of the season (late autumn, winter, early spring) in several bikes over several years and have not had an issue (OCI of 2000 miles or less); in fact, I've got a bit over 4 qts that I'm gonna use up this season (BelRay 10w-40 conventional MC oil, Havoline 10w-40 conventional pcmo, Super Tech 15w40 hdeo) before starting into my stash of Spectro 10w-40 conventional MC oil; both of my bikes will see this franken-blend...

Is running HDEO a better alternative than specific V Twin oil? The only V Twin I own specs a 40w so it pretty much takes most of the V Twin oils out of the picture for me. Currently I'm running Mobil 5w40 and will pull a sample before I dump it to see how its performed. I bought a gallon of Schaeffers 708 7000 15w40 to give a try. It is a racing oil formula that is loaded with zinc and extra AW additives. I will pull a sample of it at the same mileage I pull my sample of Mobil 1 for comparison.


Tried linking the oil but can't get it to link.

I have a Honda that falls under that change, and I'd still use Rotella T 10w-30 anyway.

I've used it inside of a Kawasaki engine for well over 2200 hours. Pulled off the valve covers at 2020 hours to replace the gaskets, and everything was spotless inside/underneath.

your renegade will make any 10w40 cry for mercy in short order.
you will probably also see that the 5w40 has already cried its eyes out.

I'm curios as well. The 708 racing formula is an interesting one for sure. I will certainly post up my results when I get them.

I doubt it's any harder on oil than my wife's air-cooled V-twin, that can run for an hour or more at a time at 8500+RPM and redlines at 11,000+...and THAT calls for 10W-40. (It has 20W-50 Mobil Vtwin oil.)

My Burgman also calls for 10W-40 (and spins 7000+RPM regularly), but that isn't a shared sump, and is liquid cooled.
 
That sucker must be geared low. Mine redlines much lower at about 8600 RPM, but it sees a lot of high load conditions (from low RPM to redline and back). This is at low speeds and often in dusty conditions. I added a fan controller to get it to kick on at 190 rather than 205 so I hope it will help a little with the oil temp. I know by the time I get 600 miles on fresh oil it looks like its ready to be changed. My UOA will tell me much more when I send it off.

I had a Yamaha 250cc V twin. While it really did buzz going down the highway...it did not get very hot compared to lower revving bigger twins. In fact in cool weather I had trouble keeping it warm. The engine had so much "meat" for its small displacement that it took an eternity to warm up and keep warm in spring or fall. It was not hard on oil at all compared to my 865cc twin now that sees half the RPM.
