Hi all. New guy here! OK, so I guess I'm confused and need some direction from all you folks! I have a 2006 F-350 PSD. My first oil change has been done with Rotella 15-40 and motorcraft filter...3500 miles....wish I had done it sooner after finding this forum! I live in the Northeast, and really wanted to begin using a synthetic 5-40 at the next change, but that viscosity rating in not listed in the Ford manual, so I called Ford and they said [although not too convincingly] that I MAY not be covered under warranty if I used this oil. They offered no input on using syn oils despite my efforts. Rotella folks said that the 5-40 encompasses all of the attributes of both oils and is appropriate for this use.....help!!!!!!

So my question is, all you folks using 5-40 syn....are you under warranty? How did you resolve this.....I want to use a year round oil that will allow me to get good winter protection AND tow in the warm weather months.

Thanks. Hope this isn't a repeat, but couldn't find anything in the search I did!!!!

Welcome to this great website, I have learned alot here from others as well. I have a 2002 F350 4x4 7.3 diesel with 51500 on the odometer. I have never used Rotella oil 15w40 or 5w40 although many do.I realize synthetic diesel oils such as Rotella 5w40 would help with the winter starts. Did the dealer do your oil change using Rotella? I also live in the NE part of the country (Md) and never had an issue with starting my truck in the winter althogh plugging in helps. So far I have used the Motorcraft diesel oil with no complaints. I'm not sure about the warranty question. My only guess would be maybe Ford thinks your milage is too low for the synthetic change over just a guess? I also have read in the past that Rotella oils had foaming issues in the Ford diesels, but I now understand that is no longer an issue. I'm sure other Powerstroke diesel owners who use Rotella oil will comment. The bottom line is in my opinion, get the proper information first and don't do anything to cause warranty issues with your truck.

Welcome!! I have a 2002 7.3l and I have used amsoil and currently use schaeffers 7000 15W40. The key to this whole issue is look at your owners manual. Mine shows I can use a 5W40 the normal oil is 15W40. I serioulsy doubt if you use a good oil 5W40 like Rotella syn you will have an oil related failure. If by chance you did then as long as the oil meets the oil ratings required for your vehicle then it is a non-issue. If you go with amsoil then they garuantee the motor if there is a failure caused by their oil.

Another resource for you on this topic and general topics concerning your new PSD is http://www.thedieselstop.com/ An invaluable resource for the PSD owner.

Rotella 5w-40 is an excellent oil and I would be shocked if you were flagged in OASIS for using it. I stay as far away from stealers... Errr... Dealers as possible (though that may be more difficult for you with a new 6.0L as opposed to me with an old 7.3L) I think if you go with a quality oil whether dino or synthetic, monitor your OCI and buy quality filtration an oil related warranty issue is extremely unlikely.

Congratulations and have some fun with your new PSD.

Did you call the Ford Motor Company, or did you call the local dealership? The car maker's customer service folks sometimes are not well informed. Neither are the dealerships'. If you cannot get a real answer, use the diesel-rated 5W-40 and sleep easy. For very cold climates, an oil made from a PAO base like Mobil Delvac 1 will flow better than an oil made from a Group III base like Shell Rotella-T syn.

Hi all and thanks for the posts! I spoke with both FOMOCO and 5 dealers. The dealers were split on 10-30 or 15-40 for winter use....no questions about summer use..... None had any clue about synthetics. FOMOCO and the manual simplyvdo not address the use of synthetics in the 2006 PSD. They list 15-40 down to 10 F, and 10-30 if a colder winter climate...

I guess I'm ok with the 15-40, but would love the easier starting of the 5-40 in the NH winters.

You can use 5w40 in your PSD without worry. First, Ford would have to prove that the use of 5w40 oil caused a problem. Before that, they would have to suspect that the oil caused a problem. If you never changed your oil, only added, then they might use the oil brand/type/viscosity as a reason to void your warranty.

The Ford dealer that I deal with at work has never once denied a warranty claim I have submitted due to an after market product.

With the shearing and fuel dilution problems that 6.0 PSD are prone too, I would probably go with a good 5w40, although it the cold weather is very extreme then a 5/10w30 (CI-4+ or better) will work fine as well.

Fwiw the 6.0 likes a 30 weight. I've been using the XD-3 0w30 without any problems, the engine runs very well. Unfortunately the fuel dilution shears the oil and forces me to change at about 5,000 miles..

I have been using Rotella Synthetic 5W-40 since I did the first change in my F-350 PSD at about 300 miles. I now have over 20,000 and the truck is now a little over a year old. It works good here in the cold and hot Nevada. You can use this oil all year without any problems.

synthetic's used to mean something years ago but now it just mean's nothing.
synthetic used to be POA based oil's and now the market is flooded with terms like full synthetic's or fully synthetic's , but contain group 3 petrolium crude.
and cost as much as a real PAO oil

as far as the warranty goes, no manufacture says what oil you have to use, only says the oil you use should meet API certification, but no where it say's what specific oil or brand to use. but they recommend what they use at the dealer so you can spend your money with the dealer.
I use a true PAO oil only and the benifit's are much more than any warranty can provide me.
