Just did an oil change on my 2000 Ford Explorer 5.0 70k on it. Couldn't find the motorcraft (fl-820s) filter I useually use so I used a Napa Gold filter w/ GC. It now has a knock in the engine @ operating temp that was not there before. Should I change out the filter or is it fine to just go w/ what I have on it now for this OCI (5k).

Thanks,
Ted

I seriously doubt that the oil filter is the cause of your knock since it is present at operating temperature and not just at startup.
I'd check the oil level first.

Anything's possible ..but if it's not startup rattle ..I tend to discount the filter as the cause.

but the only way to find out is to change the filter and see if it goes away. Since you haven't seized the engine ..then I'd say that you can wait until the next OCI. Obviously you're getting enough oil flow.

For $3, I run out an get a proline, ST, or STP filter and swap it out now. Filters are made on an assembly line. I'd wager that every brand has a few bads one get by.

Did you use the same oil(GC)and grade as always ?

I recently just changed a '97 Tahoe (138K) to Mobil 7500 5W30 blend and have been getting mild knock AFTER I start driving for about 20 seconds. To me this does not mean filter ADBV rather the oil is too thin and lifters are colapsing. It just turned mildly cold here in N. Cal and it stopped.

I have used Syntec 5W30 synth before and had no problem. Normally I have run 10W30 Castol and never had issue. I think I read the 7500 stuff is on the low side viscosity for a given weight.

Is the noise most noticable at acceleration ? If so I would evaluate the type/grade you are using.

But what would have to go wrong during assembly to make the engine "knock" beyond start up?

It may not necessarily be a defective filter if the engine itself has a worn oil pump. Some have reported having stuff like HLA rattle that lingers until the oil gets thinner with some of the finer filters. Normally it won't be an issue ..but if you have the symptom ..the filter may be the cause. Again, this is not "normal" nor is there anything wrong with the filter necessarily.

This is exclusive of "anything's possible".

If it was mine I'd be too buisy changing filter to be messing with computer! If a customer called me with this problem after my shop changed his oil recently, I'd have him on the rack soon as he would come in in the morning!

This is the first time I have used GC. Before I was using M1 reg 5w30 which is a slightly thinner oil.
As for the noise, "knock" maybe the wrong term for this. It's more of a faint "tick" that can only be heard at full temp and only at idle. You have to listen very carefully to hear it.

I see. I wouldn't worry about it. Full temp ticks are usually a function of visc at temp (but for some reason ..not always).

Geez, are we looking for problems or what?

You probably had the tic before but never noticed it. Now that you changed your routine, you are parnoid.

A 70k engine is going to have some wear btw

Either way, I don't see the oil filter being the cause of this

I guess I could be looking for something wrong, but oh well.
No premature change for me, GC and a Napa Gold filter should do just fine for this OCI, but next time a MC filter will be a necessity. Thanks for your replies.

See 302? You had us all grabbing the helmets and sliding down the pole ..being dispatched to an emergency ...when it was only a cat caught up in a tree.

We thought that you needed advanced life support

Witha lot of oil changes the engine seems to tick a bit for a while seeing the oil system will work the air pockets out that will be in some of the lifters.
