Hi, I had my MB diagnosed (98 s500 with only 63k miles) this morning and local MB dealer (with sensors attached on the body and vibro stand).
I also asked to diagnose buzzing/whining noise I posted about some time ago. Well in couple days of diagnostics with different mechanics, they came out of conclusion that it is planetary bearing in auto transmission, which cost to replace more than to replace whole transmission with 2y warranty. Also front sway bar links need to be replaced and rear springs(and possibly whole struts, which are priced $650 each online).
So, anyway total estimation was well over $5000.
I said "screw that", went to new Fiat dealer where my Father got best deal to sale his previous 2010 Cooper S.
GM at dealer thought that suspension clunking noise(or whatever he heard) is a short in Stereo system and said it is about $1000 to fix.
Anyway I choose 500 Turbo with stick, over Abarth which has more HP,little bigger turbo, dual exhaust which is louder, and even more bumpy and rough suspension.
Abarth is more track oriented, which I will never use probably.
Plus it is at least 2k more for base model.
I got employee discount thru my company (All Chrysler, Fiat, MB and Ford),got also not bad APR. Sticker price was $20,120 got around $18500 out of the door, all included(need to go over papers, don't remember exact number),plus $1000 more for MB if I buy from them today(but he was ready to buy my MB anyway, just cheaper).
So here it is, not a fan of red, but looks ok,and more visible on the road, and the last one they had with manual and non Abarth with Turbo.

After boring instructions "how to open hood and press buttons" I finally drove home in nasty weather.
So most important for BITOGERS:
I takes API certified 5w-40 oil per manual,(my MB and BMW stash will be good). Sump is 4 liters or 4qt.
Has OLM, but no more than 10k Miles or 1 year.
1st oil change, balance and rotate is free.
Timing belt change at 150k miles!!! (wow!).
Car is peppy, agile, nice and fun to drive, similar to VW GTI, Cooper S.

Congrats on the car man. I do like the little 500s. Not really practical for me, but they are great looking cars and certainly unique compared to most other cars on the road here. Enjoy it!

Also has nice bells and whistles like auto rear window wiper, if front ones are on and you are in reverse gear, bluetooth for the phone(must have with manual), shows exact tire pressure for each tire, comfy controls on steering wheel and voice commands.Btw combined mpg is 34. Comparing to 5 kiter german V8s it is sipping gas. And can take 87 octane.

Nice car. The longer belt life is because they are now using kevlar in the belts and therefore they are not wearing out as quickly.

MB? Who knew??

Anyway - I was about this close to getting one - an Abarth! White. There is another thread on the Fiat 500 around here somewhere. I'm starting to see more and more. Saw two on Monday driving by me.

Enjoy. My practical bone is the only thing stopping me. Keep us posted!

Manual or Auto? My wife wants one, but she will only take an auto and the gas mileage seems a little low for me on the autos. Not a huge fan of red, but yours looks good in it. Keep us posted.

Hey congrats on the new swap.

Your story reminded me of my parents neighbor, VP Marketing for a nearby potato chip co, who traded in his S550 4MATIC for a Nissan Xterra. All I know is that the Benz had a "costly powertrain" problem and he didn't want to have it fixed; hence the swap, according to my Dad.

Congrats!

I sat in one at a recent auto show. For two people, the 500 is actually fairly spacious and comfy, and the interior is nicer than the barbie-like interior of the Mini.

I drove one in downtown St Louis at the 2012 auto show and could not wait to get out. Vibrated, various parts buzzed and resonated. Hope yours is better than that one was.

So to get out of a $5k AT repair, you spent $20k?

And Im guessing a FAR smaller car, though higher MPG of course.

Fun little car though, glad you got stick, as the AT will just leave you with another $5k repair in a while...

Are you going to change your handle?

No rattles, wheels were not balanced good, they rebalanced them right away. This one is much more comfy than Mini for me, and I hated center speedo there. Roof is much higher inside than mini, and I'm not on short side, so that was important too. Back seats fold down almoust flat,so it can fit large items.
I'll start driving much more after summer, when I bring my fiance, and probably she will drive it the most.
$30 per tank vs $100 per tank in MB is no brainer too.
I was going to fix up suspension noises and keep MB, but 5k transmission repair got me a thought to better invest in something that will not require repair in another half a year again.
About auto transmission-they should have it, but most cars at dealer where 5-speed. I don't worry about that, my fiance actually never drove a car with auto.

I sat in the back seat of one of these at a local auto show. Good thing it had the sun roof ... I wouldn't have got out otherwise.

Congratulations on the new car.

I love the look on the saleswoman's face in the last photo as she is excited about making a sale...
and you are politely trying to stay awake.
