New engine break-in during cold Canadian winter?

Either/or. It really won't matter. I went the full four months before I changed out the factory fill in my Mazda, that ended up being just over 5000 Km. Mazda says there is no advantage to changing early... I know many will disagree, but that's what they say.

The way I look at changing the FF early or not is this....there may not really be an advantage to changing it early, but I know for sure there is no harm in doing so. It very well could simply be a "feel good" move, and so be it

i think it really would be a feel good move for me. i would like to get a 0W-20 as soon as i can. i actually just bought a quick valve for it (car delivery date late dec).
i know when it got in the low -30C even with Mobil 1 5w30 and block heater plugged in i still had some noise for the first few seconds on start up. i am hoping that the 0W-20 will help this issue.

my other question is

Is putting in synthetic in after 1000 mi too soon? I ask this because i work with a guy that said i was stupid for thinkning of putting synthetic in before 5000km.

I have a feeling you'll notice no difference with Pennzoil Platinum 0w20. If you do it will probably be because you changed from Mobil 1 to PP, not because of the grade change. Many Mobil 1 users complain about engine noise, and (rightly or wrongly) blame Mobil 1.

I know when i switched from castrol syntec to M1 i noticed a difference. Hopefully the switch from M1 to PP will be what i am looking for during extreme cold starts.

In your opinion, How does PP compare to RLI for extreme cold starts with your mazda?

the Mobil 1 5W-20 you are currently using in you '06 should be an excellent winter oil, and should work well for your new '09. 0W/5W grades of Mobil 1 have great cold weather properties....

Unfortunately I can't answer your question, because I haven't actually used any RLI products yet. I'm only in the ordering phase. From what I have read, all of there products are of an extremely high quality.

Use the Ford factory filter and Mobil 1 5W-20 or Pennzoil Platinum 5W-20. The performance is so close, and the difference between a 0W-20 and synthetic 5W-20 so marginal it's not worth trying a different oil to find that last little bit.

I tracked down some Pennzoil Platinum 0w20...it was the last 6 bottles they had in the wearhouse, so i ordered it! Now just wait a month for the car to come in and put some miles on it so i can try the PP and i got my fumoto engine oil drain valves in the mail already (for the 09 fusion (ordered but not here yet) and the 86 toyota).

the ford dealership was getting sick of me calling every week to see when it would be delivered...lol
