New Country

I'd head to The Netherlands, owing to maternal ancestry, with relatives still present and known and the language fully mastered, or Scotland, for reasons of paternal ancestry. Failing that, and giving into selfish reasons, I'd not hesitate to relocate to Southern Italy and pick up the language, because the women are simply irresistible.

Manila is way overpriced and stressful to boot. You have to plan any travel in that city. The traffic is horrible. The pollution is just as bad.

Go outside of Manila and it’s a totally different country.
Yes, my wife has intimate knowledge of Manila and you are 100% correct as well she has intimate knowledge of many of the islands and resorts, as well as family that has a private family get away/resort like paradise on a large private island cove.
I have a friend from NY whom actually lives in a jungle area that even my wife would be hesitant to travel. LOL
There is a lot of wealth in Manila as it is the financial hub and that is where the money comes from to have other places as well to escape.
One also has to remember when they say the place is overpriced is that the people living there can afford it and that’s why it’s so expensive, supply and demand.

I've been to 45 countries on six continents and always kept an open mind on where in the world I would want to live. I keep coming back to the country with the highest standard of living and greatest liberty - the good ol' USA. Now settled into the beautiful and peaceful Blue Ridge Mountains I am in retirement heaven, and here I stay.

you are a very lucky man and blessed you get to live there. Been in the Blue Ridge Mountains with my family almost every year on vactions growing up from 6 to about 17 years old. Always dreamed of living in that area. Never worked out. But my passion rubbed off on my oldest son. He tranfered on his job from way down south to up that way in 2006. He is still there today. Enjoy it. It was a dream of mine that never came true.

C'mon up, the weather's fine, the water's pure, and the land is cheap!

:)Once I was raising my own family, I took my boys on 2-3 trips up that way every year until they got too big (LOL) to travel with mom and dad or they went off to college. Well once my oldest relocated, the wife and I still made the trips a couple a year up there to visit. I really miss the travelling there. Since about 2012 I have been unable to travel anymore due to a host of medial issues. I have not given up though and each year , I hope I will find some Doctors who can solve some issues for me and I can return to making those trips. That whole area - Tennessee / Kentucky / North Carolina, Virginia was a big part of my life for over 50 years. Its a bit too far for me these days being a good 700 - 800 or so miles north east of where I am. Maybe this will be the year. Got my fingers crossed. Can't relocate but would love to visit my son and the area again a few times. He comes this way now 2-3 times a year to visit.

If you were going to leave the USA or Canada for a new country, where would you go and why? Please no politics...

The Tuscany area of Italy. Absolute heaven to me.

Note: In my extensive travel of the globe by corporate jet, it's my favorite location, by a wide margin.

What is your budget? If no budget concern probably Switzerland and Netherland in the summer and New Zealand in the other summer.

Realistically, since wife is from Taiwan and we can fit in well culturally, maybe Taiwan for retirement in a less crowded area, or maybe Costa Rica if we want to be near the nature every day. If I can speak Greek maybe a non tourist island too?

If it is by myself, with no children, no spouse, just staying at home all day, and eat out a couple times a week, I do like Macau quite a bit, and it reminds me of home back in my youth in Hong Kong.

We hate super hot weather so Singapore, Malaysia, Thailand are out (I love vacation there for a week but not melting away my life there). Wife can't stand anything colder than San Francisco so many places are out (probably half of Europe). Despite no politics I do think political stability and safety is important, so many questionable places are out too (on every single continent).

Japan would be interesting until you know how stressful they try to blend in, "The nail who stands out must be hammered down" is real.
i would move to HK in a heartbeat if it was not for my family being here. or maybe vietnam. i would hate to give up my 2A items , but i have come to realize 2A is just a right in America. The rest of the world , if one could have guns is reserved for the wealthy.

What do you want to do there that you can't do in Alaska better?

Even far less people there....

It's strange...

I truly greatly enjoy people. I enjoy helping people and taking care of them.

Yet I see so much loss of our shared humanity... This current trend continues on this track and I am quite concerned for how things will be done going forward.

Id consider Germany, maybe the eastern section, or the cross section between Germany, Poland, and the Czech Republic (I dont know which country would be the better option, the language barriers may be a consideration). Interesting areas there that are up and coming but havent changed much since about 1944.

I like Finland, the cold doesnt bother me. South east of France is also nice.

Id also consider Turkey, on the sea. Some beautiful ancient towns there, and Ive met some expats there.

But in the end, I have no issues with where I am, some of the horrible policies and taxation in NJ aside. Im close to everything I want to be - beach, mountains, city, farms, family, transportation, etc.

Well, I live in Finland but perhaps I can participate too.

As my retirement is approaching in a couple of years I have been thinking more and more about a possibility to spend the winters somewhere in Europe where it is warm. Summers I would still spend here.

At the moment I find myself thinking about Portugal, Spain, Italy, Malta and Southern France. I may add some countries on the list at later point.
