What do you want to do there that you can't do in Alaska better?Antarctica

Probably Mississippi or Texas. If you were going to leave the USA or Canada for a new country, where would you go and why? Please no politics...
I have a friend who moved there from Austria. Seems the masses all dream of Mcdonald's.Already planned out.
Chang Rai, Northern Thailand.
Wife owns farmland and a nice house there. Yeah, not a bar girl. Her dad was a judge and her sister is a college dean.
It's mostly jumped from 3rd World to industrialized modern over the last 3 or 4 decades.
Major manufacturers for harddrives, motorcycles, even make Euro approved oils. Every US food franchise is there by the hundreds. 7-11 is everywhere now. LOL
Cost of living. Housing and food are cheap. Restaurants are cheep!!!!
Weather, not hot at the base of the mountains and never below the 50's F.
Large American expat population since the '60s and Embassy/Consulates, banking, insurance just routine for American "farangs".
Good medical facilities for routine stuff, though Americans tend to come home for cancer or major surgeries.
Resident Aliens can't own guns, but Thai wife can own them. Foreigners can rent at ranges and join shooting clubs. So that gets around that.
Can work if I want under new rules.
Can take my Mercedes and Motorcycles. (Wife has a Vespa in storage. FIL's old Land Rover may be a project).
Motorcycles and scooters are common transport there, not inconvenient targets for cages.
Snakes don't generally move into your house up North. Cobras tend to stay down by Bangkok and South. YAY!
Wait till I can purchase a ticket to Mars and start over. There's no place to hide from all this madness. If you were going to leave the USA or Canada for a new country, where would you go and why? Please no politics...
New Zealand is beautiful....I’ve lived in Canada. Loved it. Even though Winnipeg can be a bit chilly in winter. The Canadian Rockies have always held a special place for me. We used to camp there every summer.
Places I’ve enjoyed visiting and could picture myself living (no particular order):
New Zealand
Australia
Portugal
Scotland
Switzerland
Australia
Italy
Sweden
Norway
Finland
Iceland
Ireland
England
France
Politics aside, so many wonderful countries in the world. Hard to choose from those I’ve visited. Each one listed has some unique and special qualities.
I’m a skier. I also like the beach.
For that reason, New Zealand tops the list. Spectacular mountains, glaciers and skiing/hiking in the South and beautiful beaches on the North Island.
Yeah no escape.Wait till I can purchase a ticket to Mars and start over. There's no place to hide from all this madness.
I’ve visited many countries that I didn’t list, because though they were beautiful, and interesting, in their own ways, I couldn’t picture myself living there.New Zealand is beautiful....
A long time ago I was going to buy some land in Canada and it was tough for a non citizen. Haven't looked since. Things may have changed.
You supplied an impressive list!
I’ve got a friend who owns a place in Southern Portugal. The Algarve region. Beautiful.A few years back I was watching a show about Portugal and house flipping. Thinking about rich Americans.
That area in Portugal was very expensive and they were living very well...
A few weeks ago some French rentals showed up in my travel app and the prices were very reasonable...very...
It may be the times not sure but a good bit cheaper than basic Florida rentals.
Why? Thanks

Panama, or possibly Costa Rica.
I'd vote for Costa Rica. Dont know too much except for the fact many people retire there, supposed to be nice, since you posted this we are looking at hotels there and my wife is now going to break my _____ about it. +LOL* Maybe Ill sway here to vacation in the Virgin Islands instead *LOL*
I got to admit, we were impressed with what we saw.
1. English is spoken around much of the country
2. Crime is ok as long as like most countries you dont stray into bad areas around the main cities (San Jose), and even then its between gangs.
3. Huge tourism industry and a more than a fair amount of Americans retire there.
4. Beautiful country from the beaches to the volcano's
5. WARM WEATHER is a must for me, I left NY for a reason!
6. Its sort of/kinda close to the USA compared to other locations.
7. Best part of all it has a world class medical community and medical care ranks above the USA. Top 20 pubic medical care systems in the world (and best in Latin America) ranked by the United Nations. Because of cost it is also known for medical tourism, even from the USA.
8. More best of all = Stable Democracy (for whatever that is worth) and highly educated population.
9. I dont have any close friends but my sister has co-workers whom retired there. Plus of course I read about it more than once in financial publications ect.
10. Anyway, looks like a nice place to visit in determining for someone if you want to buy real estate there/retire one day.
Ps. Dogs are great, I have an amazing story about ours, one day, in another thread, its a long story, just love the guy and humans can learn from his desire to move forward in life. Amazing incredible story that still amazes me and everyone who meets him, including the staff at the Vet.
To me Ireland is very similar...New Zealand or Ireland, couldn't care less about firearms.
Great information....thank you.in a 30 year career overseas i lived/worked in philippines, haiti, japan okinawa, yokohama & tokyo), taiwan, saudi arabia, south korea, canada, indonesia; traveled alot to all the neighbors; found my paternal roots in lithuania, poland, maternal roots are in canada.
random thoughts. freedom is vitally important to me. 2a only exists in usa. the recent lockdowns expose the absolute fragility of freedom.
indonesia, easy visa as my wife is indonesian-chinese. hot, polluted, traffic. easy to get personal help. medical care is iffy. energency services are non existent. i have the language, which is easy, and more english is there than one guesses. bali is an overhyped dump. public corruption. no guns, big lockdowns.
philippines, special resident retiree visa is easy and i have 35+ year friends there. i have a work around for a gun at home. see indonesia for rest. english works. big lockdowns, irritating petty rules.
malaysia, retiree visa is still easy for sarawak in east malaysia. more developed in all regards than indonesia and philippines. language essentially same as indonesia. less corrupt. no guns, big lockdowns. attracts expats who spend their days in the sauce or on golf course, or usually both.
south korea, taiwan and japan are non-irritating, safe and pleasant, especially the latter as i was fully trained/qualified in japanese language. i can get by in kitchen-mandarin, less so in korean. medical care is good. everything works really well. not as expensive as one thinks, especially with language. japan surprisingly free during the flu era, express prohibition against mandatory shots. taiwan and south korea have lockdowns, no guns in any of these 3.
canada and europe are out: expensive, socialist and big time lockdowns. i romanticized my paternal grandparents’ eastern europe, until i went there. great for visit, not to live, i understand why they made one-way trips way back then.
last point is crucial. many places are nice to see, but living is entirely different, especially without language or personal ties, often through marriage or close/recent ancestry. i’m not jingoistic but i’m hard-pressed to find a better spot for a permanent abode than (certain parts of) america.
better plan is half year abroad, half in usa. fwiw u.s. medicare is totally unavailable abroad.
