New Country

@jstert
I'm sure the BITOG crowd would want to know which good-great country had the best value in homes and general cost of living???
After looking at Costa Rica real estate and having first hand knowledge of the nice areas of Manila, Philippines where a 1 BR condo sells for $300,000 US dollars... Im not going to find anything close to the value and standard of living I have here in my 3000 sq ft home USA South Carolina. Even though the shopping malls in the Philippines blow away most US malls.
So as my wife says, this will be our home base and we will travel...

thanks but a tough question.

how to first qualify for the appropriate residence visa is a better question actually. living permanently in/out on a tourist visa is a fool’s errand and generally illegal. the less western the country the more dire the circumstances if caught.

how one fits into local culture is second: language, food, habits, beliefs, family/friends/relationships, personal security, ability to enjoy your free time hobbies, kids’ school (if applicable, and a huge issue).

a modestly middle class, north american style, home near some civilization will be expensive, even in much of usa and canada, haha. my quick thoughts? a provincial capital in the phillipines could be ok: english-speaking, cheaper, safe, clean, quick flight out, kinda familiar culture to north americans, ok hospital. an ok, private, affordable pre-high school is doable for kids.

for me, i would live in japan in a heartbeat for half the year but in a small apartment out in a suburb. great public transport, no need for a car. i have the language and know the culture ok as i lived there for 11 years. any asian wife will be happy there too, western wife i’m unsure.

there are expat enclaves in mexico that i read about but i don’t know the spanish world at all, and such a place is marked with a bullseye for robbers and scammers imho.

i don’t mean to be negative, just realistic. with the internet, healthy physical shape, portable medical insurance, steady income stream, a cash cushion to pick up and go if necessary, an open/curious mind, a spouse (if present) who is fully on board, life overseas today has many advantages of a “kindler/gentler” north america. however living overseas as a desperate escape is likely to be frustrating imho.

I've been to 45 countries on six continents and always kept an open mind on where in the world I would want to live. I keep coming back to the country with the highest standard of living and greatest liberty - the good ol' USA. Now settled into the beautiful and peaceful Blue Ridge Mountains I am in retirement heaven, and here I stay.

Manila is way overpriced and stressful to boot. You have to plan any travel in that city. The traffic is horrible. The pollution is just as bad.

Go outside of Manila and it’s a totally different country.

Poland, only because my parents are from Poland and I'm fluent in Polish.

I've traveled in Europe. Eastern European women are beautiful. I'd rate English women last
I use to drink this stuff in the 1980s.

And yes, Polish woman are unbelievable. Polish woman are absolutely beautiful, they have a great spirit and zest for life, and are very happy.

I have always had a fascination with Australia, so that would be my choice. I've watched many nature documentaries on Australia as well as enjoyed watching the likes of Malcolm Douglas, Alby Mangels, and the Leyland Brothers.

Problem is that they have draconian gun laws so you can't defend yourself against all the wildlife that wants to kill you, lol.

That is a weird place like Florida.
I would have to study up on the wildlife...I started watching a show Changing Rooms from Aussie and got an inside look at the houses. Nice...
One of my customers lives in Pullenvale...house below.

I remember watching an episode of "Adventure Bound with Alby Mangels" and as they were traveling through Queensland, they were showing all of the homes built on stilts as they were passing. It has been a long time since I watched that show and I can't quite remember the reasoning, but I believe it had to do with air flow and cooling in the heat.
I see that house is on a hillside, so obviously dual-purpose stilts? leveling and cooling? I really like that porch that wraps around the house.
