I think the GTI will beat it in acceleration and handling. It will not beat it on mileage and reliability though - two things that were very important to me. The Honda is also $3k less. Since driving pleasure is subjective, its not something you can measure. I like my Honda and that's what matters to me. The gas mileage in this thing is what is really blowing me away and that's important when your commute is 30+ miles each way.

All the comparison always rank the GTI just ahead based on acceleration and feel. But yes, the cheapest I can find a GTI at my local dealer similarly optioned is 29! My car was 23.

I too would choose an Si over a GTI for similar reasons. GTI's are very nice vehicles but I just find them to be too high priced for what they are. I just don't see a Golf + GTI goodies to equal the 10K more that dealers usually ask for.

I think you mentioned that you wanted really strong low end torque, and the VW GTI is better than the Honda at that category. Near 2000 RPM the GTI has reached its peak, and the curve is flat to about 4500 RPM, that is much better than even a very good NA 2.4L engine.

I prefer the VW GTI, for a few reasons besides engine torque:
1. seats in VW cars always fit me better than seats in Hondas.
2. I prefer a heavier steering feel.
3. I prefer the feel of the interior of German cars.

Oh you won't hear me saying I don't like the GTI. Although after the Fit, I was hatch'd out. But like I said, it was a lot pricier... Also, the Si makes peak torque at 4k and with the way it winds up, there's not a real wait. Like I said, lots of comparos put the GTI just ahead. But...I kinda liked the Civic Si, given my Honda proclivities.

But anyway, I didn't come on here to say look the Si is the greatest car of all time. Just giving it a nice review based on my experience so far. It's really surprised me given all the poo-pooing of the 9th gen Civic. And at the price, it's pretty cheap fun.

I also drove a new GTI and wasn't too impressed with the DSG transmission, power delivery and ride. I liked the interior and the styling even though I'm not really a fan of hatches.

I think if I were looking for a small, sporty and economical import car with a manual, I'd look into the Scion FRS. Especially if I lived some place where snow wasn't an issue, the RWD would be all kinds of win. The only thing that I wonder is if the FRS would be too lacking in interior space.

Congratulations! While the new Si has gotten some flack from fans of the 8th gen's high revving character, it seems like a car that fits the bill based on what you were looking for. While I haven't driven one, it seems like a nice "baby TSX" type car -- fun to drive but not really aimed at the more hardcore side of its segment.

Yeah, my brother has a TSX. I just figured if I got a TSX w/ tech package that I'd be paying 10k more for almost the exact same features. Comfort/convenience wise, he has HIDs and heated leather seats. That's about all I envy.

I was kinda looking forward to giving the upcoming Acura ILX a try as I figured there was no way they could charge too much more for basically the same car as a Civic. I was wrong. And to top it off, the ILX that comes w/ the 2.4l isn't even available w/ nav. Sorry, but if I'm going to buy an upscale car these days, it's gotta have it.

Honda's navigation software is very easy to use. Our MDX has it and my in-law's CR-V has it. I must agree...if I'm buying a new Honda or Acura, the in-dash navigation is high on my list.

I didn't know the ILX isn't available with navigation. That's kind of surprising really.

The low end and hybrid can be optioned with the tech package but not the 2.4l!

Yeah, we have nav in our Odyssey and it beats the heck out of a Garmin, even though the directions can sometimes be a tad off...
