Hello to All ,
I just bought a 2011 Chevy Camaro SS w/ factory fill Mobil 1 , during the first 1500 - 3000mi. Break-In period(1500mi) is it a good idea to change out that oil to Dino or would the Factory Fill Synthetic oil be fine to use for the New Car Break-In period(1500mi.) ?
And also what would be a good interval period to change out which ever kind of oil you all suggest I use during that time period(eg. 500,1000,1500 to 3000mi.)

If it's filled from the factory with it then it most likely needs a synthetic because it's a performance engine. The GM heads can confirm.

I would just drive it gentle for the first 3,000 miles. Not old lady but no red-lines or hard driving.

Then you are good to go.

IN the 40s and 50s auto shops would sell break in oil, I think the break in oil idea is out of date, but Im sure there are alot of folks that still believe in
Santa too. Did the manual tell u to break in the Camaro?

You're not saying Santa is not real, are you?! Next you'll be saying Groundhog Day has no meaning or the Easter Bunny is not real.

If it were mine, i'd change it as soon as i got home, i'd keep it synthetic. I don't like to leave the start up oil in very long in any engine.

Personally, I wouldn't change the factory fill before 3,000 miles. It contains all of the good additives from the assembly lubricant and will help your engine to break in properly. Change it at 3,000 miles, or when the Oil Life Monitor says to if you prefer, then fill it with any name brand oil that meets GM specification 4718M.

Personally I'd change it fairly early (but probably around 3000 miles). But I'd always use (and the 'vette requires) a 4718M (which to date is only synthetic), so absolutely don't switch to a dino. You might even break warranty switching to a dino since 'vettes always spec for a 4718M (not 100% sure about this though).

Break-in using a dino is an absolute myth, and in some cases (like high performance engines in the vette that requires the high temperature resistance of a synth), might even be harmful.

Edit: Oops, the OP bought a Camaro. I was scanning fast through 6 threads at the same time and thought it was a vette for some reason. But the same idea applies anyway.

anything after about 20 miles has already worn in the critical parts of the engine like the piston rings, so there isnt that much you can do now exhaust regular oil changes when called for

Why would you want to drain the syn oil and put non syn oil in it? Just enjoy the car and read the owners manual no more no less there is no magic to it.

lwrnccst,

Last year I bought an 09' Impala SS and used/drove on the FF until the OLM monitor told me to change it. Remember your car is still under warranty and wouldn't do a thing until it's warranty runs out. Since your FF is synthetic I'd just stay with Mobil 1 as I did on my first oil change. The way engines are built and oil is made these days using the OLM will tell you when it's time. Your know synthetic oil can take you to an easy 6K so drive and have fun.

Congratulations on your new toy.

Durango :--)

Don't be afraid to get on it. Too easy of a break-in period can actually be worse. Anything short of completely overreving the engine will not harm it in the least.

Oil? Keep the original fill in for the recommended period. Your oil choice after that.

Break-in oil IS very real, and that can be seen by looking at the chemistries of some of these oils under UOA. The fast OCI may not be real, but that is really a TBD fact and will likely never be answered...

Personally, I would leave the factory filled Mobil 1 for 7500-10000 miles and then continue using a quality synthetic oil like Mobil 1 for the life of the engine.

From what I read, engines these days are built to tight-enough specs that they're essentially "broken in" when they leave the factory.

That is essentially not true. The rings start to seat fairly quick but have you noticed That around 2,500 mikes the mpgs are about the best they are going to be?

To easy isn't good, overloading it is worse.

A continuous hard load on a new engine engine is bad for it. High loads early in an engines life should be of short duration followed by backing off the throttle.

With a roller cam and rockers and the better machineing techniques there is not as much of a need to change the oil as soon.

the first year that the corvette went to synthetic FF (and the resulting 4718 spec) was because the oil ran hot in the engine and there was easier to run synthetic than add an oil cooler....

the only company using "break in oil" that I am aware of is Honda. we used to change oil early to get metal particals out of the engine. with modern metal finishing techniques I dont think its needed - escept on rebuilds. IMHO
