new Cannonball run record

From the article:

"Almost here: They got to California as the sun rose on October 20. They could have played it safe and gone the speed limit as the rising western sun blinded them Instead, they pushed it in order to make their feat all the more impressive"

I am getting a headache trying to figure out how that got past the editor.

well its not rocket science you already know their mileage and time.

So they averaged 98mph

figure in some gas stops etc..

and they were probably averaging over 105mph

Edit:
lol rising western sun missed that.

I like the pic of his gps saying his max speed was 158mph too.

Jay Leno had a video on his website a few years ago about a couple of guys that did it a few years back in a 550 that came in about that time.

Blew the headlights out of the Ferrari, max speed was 180 in AZ.

Perfect car for it: Grey, unassuming. He looked like an orthodontist, I'm sure.

With two fuel cells, the on-board tank, and three people on board I can imagine them pulling up in the middle of three gas pumps and having everyone go at it all at once.

Twin 22gallon fuel cells, plus whatever the stock tank is, for around 800miles of range--about 60gallons per fillup, for at least 13mpg, probably more like 15mpg?

Impressive feat. Can't condone it, but it is a feat.

Didn't they do Cannonball-like runs way back when, like teens/twenties, in Model T's? I wonder what a stock Model T would pull off today, what with vastly better roads.

A stock C220 holds about 23 gallons of fuel, so they had a 66 +/- gallon capacity. Didn't mention what model it was, so I have no idea of fuel burn.

Its a 2004 because that is when the TT V12 came out and power increased from around 400 to just under 500. 13-15 mpg is about right for that big V12 at speed.

Perfect car for it, doing that is exactly what big GT coupes are built for, also the Mercedes didn't self destruct driving that fast like the Ferrari 550 did.

Jalopnik says they got the V8 "for economy" and two fuel tanks were filled simultaneously.

Legal question, can they get tickets or something after posting their avg speed and top speed for everyone to see after the fact or do they have to get pulled over in the act?

There probably is a way, but it would be hard to make stick in court. They said in another article that they have all the GPS info minute by minute to back up their claim, but it will not be made public.

police certainly have gone after violations based on video found on utube, etc.. I think they could go after them if they got a hold of the GPS data. And that data could be obtained by a warrant.

The thing is, you need some level of probable cause. how do you know they went through your state/city/county? I doubt they can obtain rights to siezure unless they have evidence suggesting they passed through that locale.

But, say, NY got it, bc they were known to be there, or CA, the states might then be able to share it? IDK. Not sure how cost-effective it would be for each state/municipality to pursue it, other than to set a precedent.

Still, I personally would not have posted it inside the statute of limitations. I also don't know if I'd want my name associated with the feat--- imagine the local PD... there would never, ever, be any more "warnings," just tickets.... But I'm also just cautious like that. I don't drive like that because I care about not getting into an accident, or the liability...

Frankly, the car excites me more! dual auxilliary gas tanks. pumps to handle it. additional onboard electronics. that stuff seems pretty awesome to me. Though, I don't get why they had so much issue with fuel smells. if the tanks have sealed caps, and manage any venting properly, (such as tieing the vent tubes together to the proper carbon canister plumbing, solenoid-actuated valving to handle pressure relief during fuel transfer, etc.) there should not have been fumes inside or outside of the car. My $10 5gal plastic gas jugs seem to manage it ok... so it doesn't take space-aged materials and fittings...

So, two 22 gallon extra tanks? If you put that in a passat TDI 6 speed you could just about make the whole trip non stop. Bigger trunk too, so maybe you could fit 3x 22 gallon tanks. 84.5 gallons, would only need 34 mpg at the high speeds, and stopping can wait till the finish line.

Good story. Wonder if all the towns or states along the path will be sending him multiple speeding tickets for an assumed speed of 158 and a pretty much guaranteed one of 100MPH.

$9000 tune up? Cripes!
