Every New Year's Day since 1955, a Chicago car club has hosted a scavenger hunt about finding the city’s secrets. On New Year’s Day, if you pass by the parking lot of Chicago’s Adler Planetarium around 11 a.m., you’ll come across a surprising collection of cars and drivers readying themselves to run a very unusual rally, the Heroes’ Happy Holiday Hangover Hassle.

I grew up in Chicago and later became a sports car rally fanatic. Most of the events went northwest from Chicago into southern Wisconsin. Went to college downtown and later worked in the Loop. Spent countless hours commuting on the Outer Drive. A rally anywhere around Chiraq today would be a risky enterprise.
