I had one to spare, so I figured I'd rip it apart (quite literally lol) and see what's inside. My main concern is to whether or not these Bosch filters use the Purolator Pure One media or the standard media from the Premium Plus. I'm not sure I know how to tell. The media has some meat to it, lighter in color, but doesn't look anything out of the ordinary. Can anyone guess from the pictures what type of media this is? There was one area of uneven pleats (quite severely I might add) by the seam.

Forgive the can-opening job, next time I'm going to invest in something cleaner than a screwdriver and wire strippers.

Any comments, ideas, experience with these would be appreciated.

There's no question this is a Purolator-made filter. I've used them enough and it's identical to the design. The Bosch filter sells for over 5$ at most stores, so I'd feel pretty ripped off to find that this uses the cheaper Purlator Premium Plus filter media. Right now the jury is still out.

There's no Parker logo that I can see anywhere on the ADBV.

The spiral core has nice big holes in it i like that,
the pure one's holes ain't that big from what i can remember.

92Sat,

Thanks for "cutting" that open for us, as I've got six of them ($3/per) and I was hoping the design of these fell somewhere between the PremiumPlus and Pure One. Looks like a bargain if you can get them on sale at places like CSK.

BTW: A can opener from your local Dollar Tree will work better than the Kung Fu grip technique you used on that Bosch.

To me the media color in your images resembles a Premium Plus (or Proline) - light tan or light brown. I don't think it's Pure One media based solely on color, unless identical media can have color variation. The old Pure One I opened has a yellower color say amber or straw color. The new P1 media seems to be light blue. Valovine Maxlife also appears more amber (though less effecient media than P1). I don't know about Motorcraft media. (All seem to be Purolators.)
If we know the filter cross reference to Purolator # there may be some filter data on various sites on some Purolators with surface area and number of pleats which may also be compared to this filter.

There are 52 pleats on the filter element. The filter can be referenced to a Purolator 14610. After a quick search on google, I'm still not sure how man pleats there are for a P1 or PP in this type.

92saturnsl2, A Pure One PL14612 I opened about a year ago has 54 pleats including the seam (otherwise its' the same as PL14610 but shorter). One difference I noticed is that the seam of the media on mine is crimped with a metal clip the entire length of the pleat (from endcap to endcap). It looks like the bosch is glued only. I don't know if the new P1's still have the metal clip or not.
Unless Bosch publishes their filter efficiency, I'd just get the Pure Ones to be sure.

Yep the metal clip on the pleat is present on these filters as well. Perhaps I'll cut open a Premium Plus to be sure...

Just doing this out of curiousity, I don't normally use the Bosch/Purolator filters unless they're a bargain.

Would yall think that's a silicone ADBV?

I'm going to use one of these in the Dixie-Cup size for my Hyundai Accent to carry me from Havoline @ 24K to GC on to 30K (I cannot believe I've done 2900 miles in two weeks, jeeez..). I'm sure it's a wonderful filter, after all, they paid $5.50 for it!

IMHO there's about a 90% probability that this is identical to a Pure One inside---they both sell at the same price point ($5.99 +/-) and both feature a silicon ADBV. I think it's very reasonable to assume thet they use the same media as well.

The newest P1 14610 (or at least the newest ones that I have) have the larger holes in the spiralled center tube like the Bosch, but have a light blue media. The Bosch media looks to me just like the old P1 media, but not like the P+.

Here's what I have:
For color comparison, the left is a PL14612 (Pure 1) on right is PPL14459 (Proline = Premium Plus) This is a bit overexposed due to flash.
PL14612_PPL14559.jpg

The true thickness of the Proline / PP element is about .015" to .018".
PP_true_thk.jpg

True thickness of Pure 1 is about .020" to .023".
P1_true_thk.jpg

Since the elements are corrugated the thickness across element corrugations is more.

Proline / PP (about .026" across corrugations).

Pure 1 (about .033 across corrugations)

If you get the chance to measure the element thickness on the Bosch I'd sure like to know how it compares.

Well I'd have to get a caliper from work to be sure on the measurements, but looking at the pictures and the filter I've got, I'm most certain that the Bosch is using the Pure1 media. This is thick stuff, noticably thicker than the media I've seen in other filters.

Eric,

Why do you think the Proline is the "same" as the Premium Plus? Just because they are made by the same company? They could have different filter media.
