Gah! Did they let Chris Bangle mess around with the design? And what's with the dash? I'm glad I have full instrumentation with seven round gauges plus digital displays.

Sure, it's a matter of personal taste or lack thereof, but I can't get used to the 7 series' tail. What's even worse is the 5 series as a whole. How ugly can they make it? That 3 series is almost as bad. In my opinion, the current (maybe not anymore?) M3 2 door coupe is the best-looking BMW of the past 20 years. I wouldn't want to drive the new one.

Interestingly enough, I believe Mercedes, which had gotten a bit stale and uninventive, is profiting from the excellent Chrysler design team.

Personally I dont mind the design of the new 3,5,or 7. The problem I have is that they ALL LOOK THE SAME! I would expect them to vary them a lil more than they did. Thats just me I guess.

Amateurish at best. The rear quarter panel, including the filler door, look like the car has been in an accident.

I'm assuming (hoping?) that they'll offer the car in the US without iDrive. What will replace the display in that giant binnacle? Looks like it will hold LOTS of sunglasses.

Instrumentation is poor, poor.

Nice.

- The back looks like a '98 chevy malibu
- The dash looks like the Sydney Opera house
- The side profile line is stolen from a late '90's ford taurus

Chris Bangle is Captain Space Command. What is missing are the elements that made BMW's what they used to be:

- Subtle
- Elegant
- Understated
- Refined
- Tasteful

It is no longer any of those things. It's like moribundman said...*****.

bangle, the fastest way to go from a line of sexy as **** beasts (E46 m3 anyone?) to a line of cars that make people wretch on ocular contact.

Truly, truly wretched.

Give me an E30, any day of the week.

While I truly love my E46 (2000-2005 design) I am going to get one of these in a couple of years. You really must look at it in person to get the full effect, pictures don't do it service. But what really sold me was DRIVING one. All of the previous model's handling attributes remain intact, and that is considering the sport model comes with 18" runflats. I also thought active steering was just a technological geegaw til I drove it back to back with an E90 (current car) without it. Makes quite a difference without adding any numbness or disconnection. I'll be checking the box for that option.

Fortunately, it is offered without the goofy i-Drive, which is also how I will order my car. Even though this generation is much better than the first offerings, it still lacks intuitiveness and just complicates simple tasks. Also the momentary stalk for the turn-signal is plain dumb. And not to mention NO oil dipstick. Still, I like it. Incidently, Chris Bangle did not pen the new design. A Japenese born, American educated Senior Designer from BMW's Munich design studio by the name of Joji Nagashima did the conceptional drawing. It made it past Design Board directors Bangle and Adrian van Hooydonk relatively intact. Even Bangle knew not to mess with the bread and butter car too much.

I really like this car...but I can't help thinking the idea for the "Start"/"Stop" button had to come from Microsoft...

shortyb: I've seen them in person, and sat in them. It just doesn't look like a bmw to me. It looks like a camry or an accord.

Plus, I don't need an M3 to weigh as much as a 3000GT VR-4, that's just silly. Frankly, if the m3 weighed closer to the corvette (3100) that would make it a lot more compelling, since BMW is always trying to position the M3 (esp. CSL) alongside the corvette & 911 (as do most magazines).

I just see BMW doing the same thing that Toyota did- kill off all the sports cars, and start catering to old people (and yuppies, naturally.

I just have a hard time reconciling the fact that to get a fun to drive bmw, you're looking at fifty grand.
