PS: I didn't know Pentax was manufacturing binoculars now in China. My old pair was made in Japan. I'm only guilty of buying the cat in the bag.

At the end of WWII Zeiss lost all its patents.

The Japanese made exact copies of German Zeiss designs and they are available on Ebay for peanuts.

In addition, these same designs were used by Kern (which was a division of Leitz), Hensoldt (Zeiss), and others for military binoculars available on the surplus market for relative peanuts.

The Russians (Arsenal, Kiev, and others), Czechs (Meopta), Romanians (IOR), Poles (PZO), and the Chinese have also made copies.

You can find 6x30 and 8x30 binoculars that have excellent optical qualities for under $100 and often under $20 that are light, usable, and of quite high quality.

1sttruck, I am looking directly at you with my 7x50s in an effort to figure out if you have ever read any of my post in this thread. Seriously, did you pay any attention? If you did pay even marginal attention, why do you want me to consider another pair of 7x50 binocs?

You must carry quite a kit around. Seems you always have a camera and also binoculars? What other goodies do you take out and about?

Always game to hear about fun gadgets that make being outdoors and enjoying nature (or anyplace) more fun!

I carry a pair of Nikon binoculars sometimes when out in the woods, but have never really thought about them too much. I usually just carry camera gear and try to make that as robust and high-quality as possible. It is pretty interesting to learn a bit about the binocular designs!

Small, zippered standard kit. I don't care for stuff rattling around in my pocket:

that's a good idea. I use an otterbox for stuff like that, but it is a bit more bulky. The knife doesn't come with me much, as Ive forgotten about one in my kit when getting on an airplane...

You can get approved cargo boxes for almost anything in any size:

Yeah, I have a huge one (1650 model or so) that houses analytical equipment. Their ipod boxes are good too when going out sportfishing.
