So there are these new Audi ads that compare their LED DRLs to Christmas lights. Basically the jist is "be the envy of all your neighbors with our cool LED DRLs".

To me these ads are gimmicky and superficial. Is their target audience really that shallow? Doesn't just about everyone already know about their DRLs anyway? Why not focus on something of substance? The appearance of the vehicle is pretty self explanatory.

I have nothing against Audi and I generally like their styling. Rant over.

Yes. A big, wealthy chunk of it, anyway.

Substance makes people's heads hurt.

Every Xmas around here the Lexus dealers show the complete lineup with huge ribbon bows on the hoods and roofs. "Don't know what to give your trophy wife? How about a Lexus? Why not?"

Sorry, this wasn't meant to start a luxury car bashing discussion. I don't own one but I have no problem with people buying whatever car they want with the money they earn.

I do think the DRLs are gimmicky but some people like them. To each their own. To run an entire ad campaign on DRLs seems ludicrous to me.

Substance doesn't sell cars but visual sensation does sell cars. A lot of owners of Audi's on the forum have bought Audi's because of the DRL's. Visual acuity sells cars and Audi is marketing it the right way.

Lots of people love lowering cars, coffee can muffles and 20 inch dishes on their cars that doesn't add substance to the car but sure adds bling bling factor and ricers envy.

That's a lame ad for sure.

I hate Audi design since they started the huge grill going down THROUGH the front bumper - it makes some good looking cars they have look like ugly TRUCKS in the front.

people say BMWs are for Yuppies...for whom is Audi?

What other connection between a car and Christmas can you come up with? These LED DRL-s are a new feature on them so they have found a creative way of mentioning them.

This is not a new feature as they first started using them on the R8 in the MY2008 I believe.

The problem is it's a copy of another ad, the typical Lexus holidays ad. The cars are nice but the TV spot is totally unoriginal. The least the ads could be are creative and entertaining.

What's next, showing an Audi on a country road, kicking up leaves to classical music? Driving across a desolate desert, kicking up dust with a back drop of soaring mountain vistas? Driving on a wet city street at night, street lights twinkling along the car, two attractive people all dressed up for a night on the town in their Audi?

I remember when the new 2002 Q45 came out and they made a big deal over the 7 lens "gatling gun" look headlights.....look how far that got them, the Q was discontinued in 2006. It takes more than a gee-whiz styling feature to sell a luxury car.

They're just trying to find a holiday tie-in for their winter sales event.

The fact that there is a thread about it means the ad has some retention for folks who view it. We remember the LED lights, and we remember Audi.

Even if the ad isn't liked, we aren't talking bad about the product. Sounds like the ad is working. Companies strive to get folks to talk about their ads, and their products.

I, too hate DRL's. But, I do have the optional HID Forward Adaptive headlight option on my new CTS. The headlights actually steer with the car helping you see better. Not many people even know this exists because dummy GM doesn't advertise any product properly. So if Audi can advertise christmas DRL's more power to them.

Note: I am aware that Tucker used a headlight system that steered with the car, too so the technology is far from new.
