New air filter has no metal wire screen

My main concern was a question of rigidity without the mesh, and what role it played, since even some quality filters don’t have the mesh backing.
It is my belief that these filters have this metal grid mesh to enhance structural support. Some filters have a softer more pliable edge & sealling lip.

I don't recall a wire on any of my air filters except K&N air filters that use oil and have the wire and cotton fiber, some other motorcycle air filters have wire buy are also air filers you oil... ?

They will claim it was not for cost cutting it is to be more environmentaly friendly producing less waste in landfills!

It may not have the backing but Purolator Tech air filters sport
Up to 96.5% Dirt Removal Power; Keeps up to 96.5% of damaging dirt, soot and debris out of your engine. Enhanced engine airflow for superior performance. Multi-fiber, high-density media traps more debris than economy filters. Replace annually or as specified by vehicle owner's manual...
I wonder what an "economy filter" may be in comparison...

96.5% is pretty pathetic. Here's a link from Donaldson that shows the relative amout of dust that passes though a filter at various efficiencies. Their standard filtration media is 99.9%. Note the difference between 99% and 99.9%.

I just changed out the air filter on my 2020 F-150.
I removed a NAPA Gold. There was no wire mesh on the back There were three strips of glue used for support.
The Purolator One that went in did have wire mesh.
