New AcDelco Filters?

Was at Advance Auto this past weekend and looked at a PF52 ACDelco filter.

Filter is completely different from the older Delphi model and it has a SILICONE ADBV.

Yep...ADBV was dull orange instead of the traditional black.

Box has no mention of USA, just says "Made in Mexico" (If I'm remembering right). Same blue color filter shell, but different graphics if I remember right.

Base plate has different "logo" stamped into it, and filter internals are different.

Champion, who makes these filters, is using this new design and is gradually replacing older models with it.
 
It's not an e-core. I have one cut apart at home. I'm not even sure Champion makes it.

I just don't like the looks of the spot-welded center tube on those new filters. It probably works fine, but it just looks cheap, IMO.

I used to use Champion and Delphi PF52s, but I have made the move to Purolator. I just can't seem to get around the overall cheap appearance of those new AC filters, even though I cannot say there is anything inherently "bad" about them.
 
What do you guys think of the phrase "Thermally bonded non-metallic end caps". Could this mean that Champion is now using cardboard end caps?
 
The Ecore filter does NOT use cardboard for it's endcaps.

The pleats of the media are thermally bonded to the endcaps with the high temp plastic center tube. The collapse pressure for this element design in 115psid minimum.

This is why I do not generally buy AC-Delco filters anymore. Not too many years ago, you almost always got something GM had manfuctured in it's own (now Delphi's) factories.

Now one never knows what an AC-Delco filter really is.

Likely the thermally bonded end caps are the same sturdy plastic ones as in the cartridge filter elements in use for years. See AC Delco PF2244G, STP 9018, Purolator L15436, and IX 57082
 
I bought a 2003 Pontiac Aztec brand new. The Aztec is made in Mexico to the best of my knowledge. On the very first oil change I tried to get the oil filter off but, couldn't. After cussing, straining and praying I finally got it off along with losing a cup of my blood in the process, I noticed that the filter was just as you described - Orange gasket material! and MADE IN MEXICO on the label. Oil filter looked the same as the American made ones, except for the orange rubber. My only complaint is with the plant where it was built. The oil filter had no oil applied to the gasket before it was installed on the engine. I had a few friends along with my wife verify this by looking over the filter gasket. They all said, the filter gasket was dry as a bone! GM assembly line supervisors are not doing their job as I'am concerned!
