Geesh, more problems, just what I need. Wife decided that our 6 year old needed a pool. So she bought an Intek 10X30, 1015 gallon, above ground pool. I managed to install it on the patio that is covered. My little girl gets sunburned within seconds, so trying to keep her out of the sun. OK. Got it installed last Friday, all is good. Put some bromine tablets in it from what I use for the hot tub. Researched showed that bromine would actually work better than chlorine and not as harmful for you. All is good, I thought until about yesterday. The water started getting cloudy, put more bromine in it, but these tabs just don't really dissolve. So I grined some up, didn't work. Water still cloudy and I'm running the pump 24/7. I had to eat face and drain all the water out. Wife claims daughter has a skin rash as a result. Anyway, got a HTH start up kit and put some granular chlorine in there. Having to learn the delicate art of pool water chemistry. Why couldn't I get the bromine to work? Not enough in solution? The HTH manual says to add about one ounce of chlorine every day....that seems excessive. Why yes, I am too dang lazy to read the manual and looking for a rule of thumb. Anybody???

Go to a pool place and bring a sample of water. Then follow their advice .I found it way cheaper in the long run to go that route.

I have an above ground pool (18x4) for the grandkids. The first thing to do is get the PH stabilized at around 7.2. Don't worry about calcium level you don't have concrete sides to leach out. I too had problems with not being able to get the water clear, then I added a second pump and filter. I use a floating clorine depenser and 3 inch tabs. I also do a shock treatment once a week and algacide as needed. Good luck

+1. Analysis of the water is usually free of charge, as they will make money selling you the products.
Best way to take care of a pool.

It took me about 2 to 3 years to get it right now people comment on how crystal clear my pool is. I only us liquid type chlorine 12.5% for shock and treatment with that only muriatic acid to lower PH and twice a year in spring and summer I treat with copper type algae killer. never never never get the hint add powder type shock or starter this is the cause of cloudy pools and huge waste of money.

I don't know if it's really an option for you, but have you considered using salt water? Everybody seems to think it's great, but you never know if that's just a bunch of hippie garbage. Seems like if salt water was all you needed people would have been doing that years ago. Anyway, you never know, it might work.

Seems like saltwater might damage the pump, we had a big pool for years when the kids were young it was nice for them but I sure am glad its gone.

I'm not a pool expert but the salt systems are getting very popular here, even a public pool I use is a salt type. Salt is just NaCl so it is using chlorine ions and maybe there is some sort of buffering thing going on that makes it work so well with less chlorine. The pool is not obviously salty and doesn't irritate your eyes.
Anyways its probably to late for the OP as I think salt needs a different system but he could check it out atleast.

What is the water temperature?

Reason I ask is that for chlorine( don't know about bromine), it is not as effective at killing bacteria when water temps exceed 85 degrees F. Thus more is needed.

I have a 27' diameter above ground pool that I use just 3" chlorine tabs in the skimmer and in a floating dispenser and the water stays crystal clear.

But I do have a larger pump and sand filter that came with the pool 12 years ago.

Water temp is around 75-ish. That's what I discovered in using bromine, it wouldn't really dissolve in those temperatures and the only bromine readily available, i.e. Walmart and Home Depot, was the tab kind, which I have plenty of. My neighbor just got a salt water system, but they have a huge in-ground pool. You have to run some electricity to it to make it work. Don't know the exact details, but he said he calculated it out and about 3 years, it will pay for itself when compared to using chlorine. Also, the salt water system doesn't damage his liner, which he's had to replace every 3-4 years. That start up kit has the stablilers, chorine granules and shock with it. I'm still going to supplement it with bromine. What I'm doing now is putting a bromine tab in a used milk jug and filling it with water and letting it sit out in the sun. You can smell the bromine when you take the top off, but the tab looks relatively unused. There is a smaller salt water system you can buy from Intek, for around 180 bucks. 180 bucks will buy a LOT of chlorine.......

I hate pools. Good luck.

It's a hole in the ground you throw money into. Or in this case, above ground. Everyone in FL has the "have to have a pool" attitude. Then they go swimming in it a few times a year.

Have since "upgraded" to a 16'X4' frame pool this year. Using a salt water system. Works OK, just got to clean the titianium plates about once a month. But now, that thing is HOT. Been really hot down here for the past two months.

first thing to remember is to check all the chemicals if they are in correct range. use pool brush to brush the bottom and sides of the pool and then vacuum. and clarifier can be added to the water to bind to the micro particles to help them filter out. that's what we did to our above ground pool.

Yeah, you said that exact same thing 2 and a half years ago, word for word. Look 3 posts up from yours. All 3 of your posts on this forum have been about pools, and you just repeat the same thing and you include a link to pool equipment you probably sell. (although you forgot the link this time). You're a useless spammer and I'm reporting you to the moderators to have you banned.
