I've been stockpiling filters to cut open later. Well later was tonight. I have summit's oil filter cutting tool which I used to compare royal purple, ac delco (ecore), m1, and p1 filters. The cutting edge on the tool cut through the p1 can scary easy and the p1 filter media was extremely wavy and the others weren't.

I was shocked how well the ecore held up when used around 8,000 miles. I was really impressed by it. Is there any difference between the encores made for STP, super tech, or ac delco?

One filter you don't like and you're ditching the entire line?

Why is wavy media a problem?

lol, a cutting tool cut open a can easily, and therefore you're never using one again? I'm going to bed......

I haven't liked p1 really ever. They have a coating that's flaky. The thinnest can of any filter. They dent super easy. Their efficiency rating is a blanket statement based on one filter. Dome end by passes. If you can have a filter that the media comes out looking like it did when it went in, why would you want one that came out looking like it just went through [censored].

I know there is a lot of love here for P1's, but I just don't see it.

Again: Why do you care? Does it reflect poorly on the performance of the filter? If so, how?

I think on a low hanging oil filter road debris is a real concern. Ive had them crush or bend when removing. It's common knowledge they are thin. Just not a fan of air thin filters.

It is just one filter...

That's the thing it's not just one filter. I've used pureones on different vehicles. I'm not saying the filter doesnt do it's job. I'm saying what my eyes keep seeing and saw again tonite just really turns me off to them.

I would try a cartridge version in a Toyota. No flaky paint, thin can, or bypass issues (issues to me compared to other filters).

I worked at a local quick-lube for 2 years and have removed literally thousands of oil filters. I have seen pretty much any brand out there crush in some instance or another, usually it had more to do with the physical dimensions of the filter itself (shorter and fatter filters crush less easily than taller and thinner filters) than with the particular brand.

I made the mistake of blasting P1's on here before, it would be like blasting Pennzoil...you and your family would not be safe and would need to go into some kind of witness protection program. I Don't like how Purolator make's the 97.5/99.9% efficiency claim either. No filter is that good and I sure can't tell a difference in the consruction of the "sand can's" or the Classic in any way except for the silicone ADBV. I still use them occasionally, I don't think they are worse than Fram ExtraGuards. They are OK for a pretty cheap price. I wouldn't worry too much about the waves.

Personally, I use PureONE, Napa Gold/WIX for my mid-range filter of choice. I wouldn't mind using an entry level version by the same brands, or others comparable such as a Bosch Premium, but it's just a preference for current application. I can get PureONE cheapest, but I like NG/Wix 1334 since it's the largest filter for my Civic VX.

I believe my parent's vehicles each have an oil filter that points straight downward, but is up in a crevice behind the oil pan itself.

That being said, any filter with a direct impact would have a hard time holding up to 'visible' damage. Otherwise, is the concern that if the filter reaches capacity and needs to go into bypass mode, that the can may explode or something because of a weaker canister?

See ya! Best of luck with your "upgrade" to the ecore (all the same).
